He holds the record for the most career free throws made and ranks second behind Jeff Jantz for total career points scored. The NAIA All-American continued his playing career professionally in England, Argentina and the Philippines during the mid-1980s. As an assistant coach for nine years for SNU after graduation, Thurman honed his coaching skills further at the University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Christian University. In 1999 he became the head basketball coach at Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Texas and then at Southwestern Oklahoma State where his teams qualified for the Lone Star Conference Tournament each of the three years he coached.
