She once worked as a hairdresser and has been playing basketball internationally for more than 15 years, but even more amazing is the fact that the outstanding forward Astou Ndiaye-Diatta has more than twenty brothers and sisters.

The West African native from Kaolack, Senegal led SNU women’s basketball to four NAIA national championships from 1993-1997 on a team that lost only four games in her entire career. Ndiaye was named an NAIA All-American twice, SAC Defensive Player of the Year in 1996, and SAC Player of the Year in 1997. She also holds school records for second in most field goals made and second in most rebounds made in a single season.

Fluent in five languages and excelling in the classroom as well as on the court, she was named a Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete twice. In 1999, Ndiaye was the 22nd pick in the WNBA draft, going to the Detroit (now Tulsa) Shock. She has also played for the Senegalize national team. Ndiaye has been an active supporter of the Special Olympics and remains one of SNU’s most outstanding athletes.
