BETHANY — Morgan Loewen ripped 14 kills and hit .333 for Southern Nazarene in a 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-18) loss to No. 23 Lubbock Christian.
The Crimson Storm (21-14, 6-7 SAC) hit just .076 (28-20-105) in the match and struggled all night to string points together.
Loewen also posted a pair of blocks and three digs. Taryn Steele had 22 assists and was just a dig shy of a double-double. Sarah Groesbeck led the way defensively with 12 digs and also served a pair of aces. Ellen Martin chipped in with eight digs while KateLyn Biddy had seven. Angela Evans also had five blocks as SNU as a team had 6.5.
Elissa Loynes and April Severyn led the way for the Chaparrals (24-7, 10-3 SAC) as Loynes ripped 13 kills while Severyn had 10 and hit .348.
SNU led early in the first set at 5-4, but LCU used a 12-4 run to take a 16-9 lead. The Storm cut it to 19-15 with a 6-3 run and were down just 20-16 before the Lady Chaps took the first set with a 5-1 run.
There were 13 ties in the second, yet the Storm were on the wrong end of every tie breaker. LCU looked to be putting SNU away after taking its biggest lead of the set at 19-15, but the Storm battled back with a 5-1 run that was capped by back-to-back Martin kills to tie it at 20. The Lady Chaps ripped two straight kills to lead 23-21, but SNU answered again to tie at 23. Severyn gave LCU set point at 24-23 will a kill, but Loewen tied it at 24 with a kill of her own. Two tied again at 25 before a Melissa Green kill and an SNU error made it 2-0 in favor of LCU.
The Lady Chaps put it away in the third with an early 12-4 run to take a 16-8 lead. LCU led 21-13 late in the set when SNU scored three straight, two on kills from Danielle Hampton, to make it 21-16, but that was as close as the Storm came.
The Crimson Storm will now get set for the final match of the regular season when they host Wayland Baptist for a 1 p.m. contest.
