No. 25 Hornets Handle the Storm

Southern Nazarene battles but comes up short against Emporia State, 3-1

EDMOND, Okla. — Southern Nazarene closed out the GAC/MIAA Crossover Tournament Friday afternoon, falling in four sets to No. 25 Emporia State.

Southern Nazarene (8-6, 0-1 GAC) grabbed early momentum in the first set, using a 15-kill effort on .333 hitting to take a 25-20 win despite 14 kills from Emporia State (11-1) on .167 hitting.

The Hornets flipped the script in the second set and shut down the Crimson Storm attack. Emporia State posted 13 kills on .300 hitting to win 25-13, while limiting SNU to just 7 kills.

The third set was a battle. SNU put down 14 kills, but Emporia State answered with 16 kills. Southern Nazarene was in the driver's seat, but the Hornets rattled off three straight points to edge it 27-25 and take a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set belonged to the Hornets. Emporia State hit a match-high .333 with 15 kills and just two errors to close out the match 25-14 and secure the 3-1 victory.

Southern Nazarene finished hitting .173 with 46 kills, 8 aces and 6 blocks, compared to .242 with 58 kills for Emporia State. 

Kate Wright led SNU with 20 kills, an ace, and 19 digs for a double-double, while Rayanna Mauldin added 10 kills and Riley Richardson chipped in 5 kills and a team-high 4 blocks.

Emma Grace Moddelmog directed the offense with 37 assists, a team-high 3 aces and 10 digs for a double-double. Sydney Marquez led the defense, adding 18 digs and 2 aces and 5 assists.

The Crimson Storm will return to the Sawyer Center to host Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, September 15 at 6:00 pm.
