Southwestern Oklahoma State takes down Storm

Box Score WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Southern Nazarene had plenty of chances to make a game out of the 2013 edition of the Route 66 Rivalry, but red zone issues plagued SNU in a 42-14 loss at Southwestern Oklahoma State.
 
The Crimson Storm (0-9, 0-9 GAC) watched the Bulldogs come up with two goal-line stands and an interception in the red zone as SNU dropped its final road Great American Conference contest of the year. Southern Nazarene was 1-for-4 inside the red zone on the day.
 
The Crimson Storm threw for 172 yards and ran for 71 for a total of 243 yards while giving up 609 yards to the Bulldogs (5-4, 5-4 GAC). Southwestern ran for 253 yards and threw for 356.
 
Trey Hills threw for 164 yards and two touchdowns and completed 14 of his 33 attempts. Alex Reed and Jarod Martin each had a touchdown reception while Reed had 70 yards receiving on two catches while Martin had 38 yards on four catches.
 
Blake Cavill and Konner Bent led the way on the defensive side as Cavill had 12 tackles and Bent had 11. Chris Hudson also had a sack.
 
Southwestern scored on its first two possessions to lead 14-0 before the Storm finally got on the board with 3:57 left in the first. On the second play of the drive, Hills hit Alex Reed for a 61-yard strike to cut the deficit to 14-7. SWOSU led 21-7 in the second quarter when SNU put together a long drove and got all the way down to the Bulldog's five-yard line and had a first and goal. Southwestern though come up with a goal line stand on third and fourth down. The Storm had another shot inside the red zone in the second at the SWOSU 10-yard line, but the Bulldog's Steven Townsley picked off a Hills pass on third and goal.
 
The Bulldogs then took a 28-7 lead and carried that lead into the half after picking off another SNU pass at the end of the half as SNU had a shot from the SWOSU 25-yard line.
 
The Bulldogs stretched it to 42-7 with 7:43 left in the third before Hills completed his second touchdown pass of the game with 4:06 left in the third when he found Jarod Martin in the end zone. The five-yard pass completed an 8-play 68-yard drive.
 
Southwestern Oklahoma State again came up with a goal line stand with 11:51 to play in the fourth after the Storm had first and goal at the SWOSU 10-yard line.
 
The Crimson Storm now get set for the GAC and home finale as SNU welcomes Northwestern Oklahoma State for Homecoming, Saturday, at 1:30 p.m.
