Southern Nazarene takes on Tigers in week five

BETHANY, Okla. —
For the second straight year Southern Nazarene makes the trip to East Central and will go for its first win of the season and first win over the Tigers. The Crimson Storm are coming off a 63-21 loss at Harding while East Central has lost three in a row after knocking off Arkansas-Monticello in the first week of the season. 

LAST WEEK
Trey Hills got his first start of the week at quarterback. The freshman threw for 176 yards and one touchdown as he went 5-for-13 passing. Chris Hunter recorded his first 100-yard rushing game of the year as the sophomore went for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries.

Seven different receivers recorded catches as Jarod Martin had two for 32 yards. Cass White and Brennan DiChiara each had a single catch for over 50 yards. White had 146 all-purpose yards as he also had 87 yards in kick returns. 

The Crimson Storm trailed 35-0 at the half, but scored three third-quarter touchdowns. Hunter scored the first two touchdowns of the quarter before Hills hit Ryan Mischler for a 29-yard strike for the final touchdown of the night for SNU.

The Storm gave up 650 yards of total offense, 505 of which came on the ground. Harding also threw for 145 yards. SNU threw for 217 yards and ruan for 103 yards for a total of 320 yards. 

The Tigers led Henderson State 17-14 at the end of the first quarter, but watched the Reddies score 28 in the second as HSU led 42-17 at the half and cruised from there. Quarterback Spencer Bond threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns as he was 26-for-49. He also led the team in rushing with 71 yards.

The Tigers allowed 746 yards of total offense while gaining 418 yards as a team.

LAST TIME
Last East Central jumped out quickly on SNU as it scored on its first two drives of the game. The Tigers also picked off a Dylan Terry pass and ran it back for a score to lead 21-0 at the end of the first. 

The Storm got on the board in the second quarter when Terry completed a 20-yard pass to Alex Reed to cap a 4-play, 53-yard drive and make the score 21-7. ECU answered with a touchdown and a field goal to take a 30-7 into the half. 

SNU cut it to 30-15 in the third on a Derick Perkins touchdown, but the Tigers put it away in the fourth with another score to end it at 37-15. Terry finished 158 yards passing and a touchdown. He was 25-for-45 on the night. 

THE SERIES
This is just the second time these two teams have ever played each other and both times ECU has scored exactly 37 points. The first meeting came back in 2008 and it was a classic double-overtime game.

The Crimson Storm took a 24-0 lead at the half, but watched the Tigers storm back in the second half. East Central trailed 24-21 when the Tigers' Corey Dozier drilled a 32-yard field goal to make it 24-24 with 4:06 to play. Dozier had a chance to end it in regulation, but missed a 53-yard field goal with 45 seconds left. 

In overtime, SNU scored on its first possession, but missed the extra point to lead 30-24. ECU tied it on their first possession and also missed a point after attempt to tie it at 30-30. The Tigers scored first in the second overtime to lead 37-30 and SNU fumbled on the ECU 8-yard line to end it. 

RECORD CHASING
Chris Hunter is 215 yards away from becoming the fifth back in school history to run for 1,000 career yards. The sophomore has 785 career yards and stands sixth all-time in school history in career-yards. 

Dylan Terry has thrown for 20 touchdowns in his career. That ranks him fourth all-time in school history. He needs three more to catch Dan Denardo (2003-04) for third all-time. The senior is also seventh all-time in school history in total offensive yards with 2,327. He needs 136 more yards to catch Denardo for sixth all-time and 166 more to catch Derick Perkins (2009-12) for fifth

Jarod Martin enters Saturday's game with 2,387 career yards receiving. The career leader in reception yards needs 213 more yards to hit 2,500. He also notched his 150th career reception against Harding. The senior also needs just one more touchdowns to tied Perkins for fourth all-time in touchdowns responsible for. He currently has 32. He also has scored 192 points in his career and needs 10 more to catch Perkins for second all-time.

Michael Hicks is fourth all-time in school history in total tackles. The junior currently has 258 career tackles and needs six more to catch Dillon Brumbaugh (2009-12) for third all-time. Jarrod Dewald is second all-time with 266 and Chris Bogle (2000-03) is the school's all-time leader with 274. Hicks' 137 unassisted tackles 121 tackles are both fifth all-time.

He is also third all-time in tackles for a loss with 42.5 and needs three more to catch Dewald for the school record. His 169 yards from tackles for a loss are fifth all-time in school history.

INSIDE THE GAC
Chris Hunter ranks sixth in the Great American Conference in rushing yards per game as he is averaging 84.8 yards per game. He currently has 339 yards on the year and is averaging 3.8 yards per carry and has five touchdowns on the year. Hunter is also eighth in scoring at 7.5 points per game. He has 30 on the year. 

Defonzo Mack and Johnathan Martin are ranked fifth and sixth in kick return average. Mack is averaging 17.2 yards per return while Martin is averaging 16.8.

Michael Hicks is ranked fourth in tackles with 34 and is averaging 8.5 per game. Christo Lisika is 12th in sacks with 1.5. He is also fifth in tackles for a loss with 5.0 for a loss of 21 yards.

NEWS & NOTES
Konner Bent and Dalton Davis both recorded career-highs in tackles at Harding as Bent had 11 and Davis had seven ... Brennan DiChiara recorded his longest reception at Harding last week ... Chris Hunter's 121 yards against the Bisons was also a career-high ... Blake Cavill had a career-high 11 tackles at East Central last year ... Chris Hunter has scored two touchdowns in two different games and has a touchdown in three of the four games played this year. He currently has 398 all-purpose yards ... Michael Hicks has no less than eight tackles in any game this season. He also has a sack in two different games ... Southern Nazarene has picked off at least one pass in three of the four games they have played this season. All three interceptions have come from different players. Stan West recorded an interception against Henderson State, Sherrod Daniels notched a pick against Ouachita Baptist and Michael Hicks recorded an interception against Harding ... The Crimson Storm have also forced two fumbles this season as Dylan Parker and Chris Hudson each forced a fumble against Ouachita Baptist ... Through the first four games of the season, SNU's offensive output is much higher than last season. The Storm are averaging 290.0 yards per game this year as opposed to 158.2 yards per game in 2012.
