Storm Take First GAC Loss

Southern Nazarene dropped its first conference match of the season

Roberts matched her career-high in kills set last year.
Box Score WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Kira Roberts tied a career-high with 19 kills and hit .304 for Southern Nazarene in a 3-1 (26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20) loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State.

The Crimson Storm (4-9, 2-1 GAC) took their first loss in the Great American Conference.

Roberts also added four blocks and four digs, but SNU hit just .167 (56-27-174).

Natalia Oliveira posted a big double-double on the night with 15 kills and a season-high 28 digs. She was just two digs short of tying her career-high and added two blocks as well. Taylor Chase dished out 45 assists and had six digs. Kaitlyn Belanger also had 14 digs on the night.

Neither team held a bigger lead than three in the opening set and had 10 ties before someone finally broke through. The Bulldogs took their biggest lead early at 4-1, but SNU rallied and took its biggest lead late at 21-18 on a Chase ace. SNU led 23-22 when a SWOSU error gave the Storm set point, but the Bulldogs got two straight kills to knot it at 24. Southwestern then got two errors from SNU to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

SWOSU pretty much controlled the second set from start to finish, but SNU wasn't going away. Down 2-0, the Storm fought through 12 ties before finally getting set point on a Roberts kill. The Bulldogs got within one at 24-23, but the Storm went right back to the junior as Roberts put it away and kept hope alive as SNU cut it to 2-1.

Southwestern scored seven of the first eight points of the fourth and were up 8-2, but the Crimson Storm answered with an 11-3 run, that included five kills by Roberts, to take a 13-11 lead. Southwestern though responded with a 6-1 run to lead 17-14. The Storm fired back with a 4-1 run started by a Jamie Hope kill as SNU tied it at 18. After the two tied at 19-19, Southwestern went on a 6-1 run, including three straight kills at the end to seal the match.

The Crimson Storm will now get set to host Ouachita Baptist, Friday, for a 4 p.m. GAC contest.
