ALVA, Okla. — When the time has come, it has been someone different each night lately for No. 15 Southern Nazarene and once again it was another key figure who played one of her best games in her four years in Bethany in a 69-59 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State.
Sharmeda Johnson was just three points short of a career-high as she notched 16 and pulled in a career-high 16 rebounds in her only double-double of the year. The senior forward was pretty consistent all night notching eight points and eight rebounds in each half. She went 6-for-9 from the field, 4-for-5 in the first half, and went 4-for-7 from the line.
SNU got plenty out of its posts as Ashley Mantooth scored 10 points off of the bench and SNU scored 22 points in the paint. The Storm also scored 14 points off of 11 offensive rebounds. Johnson had six offensive boards. Oumoul Thiam also notched 12 points and three assists. Logan Martin and Kristin Milster each scored eight points. Martin notched seven rebounds and dished out three assists while Milster matched Martin in assists and grabbed three boards as well.
The Crimson Storm (20-7, 14-5 SAC) shot 42.3 percent from the filed and were held to just 26.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc. SNU though notched 22 points off of 24 Lady Ranger turnovers.
SNU didn't trail in the first half until the 7:05 mark when Northwestern went on a 7-2 run to lead 19-18. Milster gave the lead back to SNU with a jumper and then later hit a free throw to give SNU a 21-19 lead, but the Lady Rangers fired right back with six straight points to lead 25-21 with 5:34 remaining in the first half.
Abbey Marra though hit a pair of free throws to spark a 15-6 run for the Storm to end the half as SNU took a 36-31 lead at the break.
Northwestern scored the first 10 points of the second half and took its largest lead of the game at 41-36 early in the second. NOSU led 46-42 with 14:33 to go when Mantooth hit a pair of free throws to spark a 10-2 run to lead 52-48 midway through the second half.
Northwestern hit a trey to cut it to 52-51, but SNU didn't give up the lead the rest of the way. SNU closed the final nine minutes with a 17-8 run to pick up its fourth straight and move one game closer to securing third place.
SNU can lock up third place in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a win Saturday against Oklahoma Christian. Tip is set for 3 p.m.
