SNU Opens GAC Play With Gritty Road Win

Crimson Storm battle back and outlast Southern Arkansas 54–52 in Magnolia

MAGNOLIA, Ark. - Southern Nazarene kicked off GAC play in dramatic fashion on Thursday night, grinding out a 54-52 win over Southern Arkansas on the road to start conference play 1-0.

Southern Arkansas (4-3, 0-1 GAC) struck first and controlled most of the opening quarter. The Muleriders jumped ahead with a couple of clean jumpers and a layup, but Jordan Hoffman kept SNU (1-4,1-0 GAC) afloat with back to back layups in the paint. Halyn Browning knocked down a smooth jumper, and Boston Berry added another bucket off a dime from Hannah Duncan. Even with the late push, the Crimson Storm trailed 14-8 after the first quarter.

Southern Nazarene started to shift the momentum in the second quarter after Braci Nyberg tipped one in to break up SAU's early push. Jillian Crawford followed with a free throw and a strong jumper inside, and not long after, Nessa Begay came up big with a steal that turned into a fastbreak layup. SAU hit a three to slow things down, but Begay answered right back with a jumper off a smooth assist from Crawford. The Storm kept chipping away and went into halftime trailing just 27-23.

Coming out of the break, the Muleriders struck first with a tip-in, but Nyberg answered right away, hitting a pair of free throws on a fastbreak chance. Hoffman followed with two clutch free throws of her own to keep the Crimson Storm within reach. The energy shifted when Shannon Burton drilled a big three off a feed from Nyberg, giving Southern Nazarene all the momentum. Southern Arkansas broke the run with a layup, but the Storm stayed locked in and carried a 43-42 lead into the fourth quarter.

Southern Arkansas opened the final quarter with a jumper and a three, but SNU didn't flinch. Nessa Begay grabbed a huge offensive board and tipped it in to spark the Storm. Boston Berry followed with a clutch three
off a perfect pass from Hannah Duncan, then extended the lead with a fastbreak layup set up by Jordan Hoffman. SAU knocked down a late free throw, but SNU locked in on the defensive end and closed it out, earning a gritty 54-52 road win to open GAC play 1-0.
