Box Score ALVA, Okla. — Derick Perkins rushed for a career-high 229 yards for Southern Nazarene in a 35-28 loss at Northwestern Oklahoma State.
The senior is the first 200-yard rusher since Jason Kilmer ran for 200 yards against Southwestern Assemblies of God Sept. 6, 2003. Perkins also scored his 22
nd career rushing touchdown.
The Crimson Storm (1-9) ran for a season-high 311 yards, just 66 yards off a school-record.
Dylan Terry, who was not expected to play earlier in the week, threw for 205 yards and three touchdowns as he completed 15 of his 40 passing attempts.
Sedrick Johnson,
Jarod Martin and
Alex Reed all had a touchdown reception as Johnson led the way for the receiving core with five catches for 68 yards. Johnson now has 64 receptions on the season and is just one shy of tying the school's single-season record.
Southern Nazarene nearly had 200 more yards of total offense than the Rangers (2-7) as the Storm notched over 500 yards of total offense for the second time this year. SNU had 516 total yards and held Northwestern to 334.
Matt Pruitt also broke the school's career record for interceptions as the junior picked off his 16th career interception. He broke the school record held by D'Antae Mitchell (2000-04).
The Rangers took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter before the Crimson Storm got on the board when Johnson corralled a nine-yard pass from Terry. SNU trailed 14-7 at the half before Perkins completed a 60-yard drive that took just three plays to complete. The Storm started the half on their own 40-yard line and after a nine-yard pass put it at the SNU 49, Perkins broke lose for a 50-yard scamper down to the NWOSU 1-yard line. The senior then broke across the goal line to tie it at 14-14.
Northwestern used just three minutes to take a 21-14 lead, but SNU answered right back. After SNU drove down to the NWOSU 5-yard line and turned it over on downs, the Rangers turned it right back over with a fumble on the very next play. Terry then hit Martin on third down to tie it at 21.
The Rangers added a touchdown at the end of the third and notched another early in the fourth to build a 35-21 lead before Reed cut it to 35-28 with a touchdown. Terry hit Reed on the eighth play of the drive with 3:58 left to play for a 58-yard touchdown pass that completed a 75-yard drive.
SNU did get the ball back with 1:05 left at its own 24-yard line and pushed it down to the NWOSU 42, but ran out of time.
The Crimson Storm now turn their attention to their final game of the year as they host College of Faith, Saturday, for a 1:30 p.m. homecoming game.
