BETHANY, Okla. — If one set could set could tell the way a match would go then Southern Nazarene would have been in and out of the Sawyer Center in just three sets. That's not what happened though as SNU fell 3-1 (15-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22) to Central Oklahoma despite a dominant start to the night.
The Crimson Storm (12-3) breezed through the first set and looked to be rolling towards a win after it hit .440 in the first set and held the Bronchos (6-6) to a .000 clip. SNU didn't hit over .330 the rest of the night and UCO didn't hit under .250 as the Bronchos rolled the Storm in the final three sets
Taylor Jacobs and
Natalia Oliveira each ripped 14 kills while Jacobs had three blocks and an ace and Oliveira had nine digs. Jacobs also hit .522 (14-2-23).
Ellen Martin posted 12 kills and 14 digs along with four aces.
Kaylee Piatt served a match-high 40 assists and also had six digs and four aces.
KateLyn Biddy notched a match-high 16 digs and served a pair of aces.
Jamie Hope added three blocks.
SNU as a team hit just .196 (49-21-143) while UCO finished at .258 (50-16-132).
Southern Nazarene trailed 3-4 early in the first set, but didn't trail again after the Storm scored four straight points in the midst of an 18-6 run as SNU took a 21-10 lead. UCO cut it to 23-14, but got kills from Piatt and Martin to close out the set. SNU hit .440 (14-3-25) in the set and got five kills from Martin. The Storm also had two blocks in the set.
It just the opposite in the second, as UCO used a 12-4 run to lead 14-7 and controlled the set from there to tie it at 1-1. In the third set, UCO broke a 12-12 tied with three straight points and never trailed again. SNU cut it to 15-14 on consecutive kills by Oliveira and Martin, but the Bronchos rattled off five straight points to take a 20-14 lead and held on for the 2-1 match lead.
SNU trailed by as much as six, seven different times in the fourth set and were down 20-14 when a Jacobs kill sparked an 8-1 run as Martin gave SNU its first lead of the set at 22-21 with a kill. UCO answered through scoring the next four points to close out the match.
Alex Richardson led the way for UCO with 17 kills while Jordan Jacobs had 12 and Morgan Roy had 10.
The Crimson Storm will now travel to St. Gregory's, Tuesday, for a 7 p.m. Sooner Athletic Conference contest.
