Storm Drop Two Games at GAC/MIAA Crossover Tournament

Volleyball falls to Pittsburg State and Fort Hays State to open the GAC/MIAA Crossover Tournament

EDMOND, Okla. — Southern Nazarene opened play at the GAC/MIAA Crossover Tournament Thursday in Edmond, falling to Pittsburg State before traveling to Shawnee to take on Fort Hays State, falling once again in three sets.

Game 1

The Crimson Storm (8-4, 0-1 GAC) dropped the tournament opener 25-16, 25-14, 19-25, 25-8 to the Gorillas (8-1, 0-0 MIAA).

Pittsburg State grabbed early momentum in the first set, using a 9-kill effort on .273 hitting to take a 25-16 win. PSU took advantage of numerous SNU miscues as the Crimson Storm hit .000 in the frame with 9 errors.

The Gorillas kept control in the second set. Pittsburg State posted 10 kills on .320 hitting to win 25-14, while Southern Nazarene once again struggled to find their footing, hitting -.027 with 9 kills and 10 errors.

Southern Nazarene broke through in the third set behind its most efficient attack of the day. SNU reeled off 11 kills on 43 swings to turn the match around and roll to a 25-19 win to make it 2-1.

The fourth set belonged to Pittsburg State. The Gorillas posted a match-high 12 kills on .407 with just one error and tallied 19 total blocks on the day, closing out the match 25-8 to take the 3-1 victory.

Hannah Morgan led SNU with 9 kills and a team-high 3 blocks, while Riley Richardson added 8 kills and a block and Kate Wright chipped in 8 kills and 11 digs.

Emma Grace Moddelmog finished with 18 assists and 2 aces, Brelee Mauldin added 10 assists and a team-high 3 aces, and Sydney Marquez led the back row with 13 digs.

Game 2

Southern Nazarene dropped its second match of the GAC/MIAA Crossover Tournament Thursday evening, falling in three sets to Fort Hays State (8-3).

Fort Hays State grabbed early momentum in the first set, using a 14-kill effort on .462 hitting to take a 25-19 win despite 13 kills from SNU on .321 hitting.

Southern Nazarene battled in the second set behind its best offensive stretch of the night. SNU put down 20 kills on 56 swings for a .286 clip, but Fort Hays State answered with 24 kills on .292 to edge it in a back and forth battle, 30-28.

The third set belonged to the Tigers late. SNU hit a team-best .367 with 13 kills and just two errors, but Fort Hays State posted 16 kills and held off a late SNU push for a 25-23 win to secure the 3-0 victory.

Southern Nazarene finished hitting .316 with 46 kills, 3 aces and 6 blocks, compared to .307 with 54 kills for Fort Hays State. Wright led SNU with 17 kills and 12 digs, while Richardson added 7 kills and a block and Rayanna Mauldin chipped in 6 kills, an ace, 2 blocks and 11 digs.

Moddelmog finished with 19 assists, Mauldin added 16 assists and a team-high 2 aces, and Marquez continued to lead the back row with 18 digs.

The Crimson Storm will take on No. 25 Emporia State in their final game of the GAC/MIAA Crossover on Friday, September 11 at 12:30 pm in Edmond.
