Box Score
ALVA, Okla. — For only the second time in three years and the first time since Oct. 10 of 2009, Southern Nazarene did not have a passing touchdown as Northwestern Oklahoma State upended No. 10 SNU, 28-12.
The Crimson Storm (5-1, 1-1 CSFL) had totaled at least four touchdowns through the air in the first five games in the season, but had both touchdowns come on the ground in the loss to the Rangers (3-3, 2-0 CSFL). SNU was not lacking in offense as it totaled 432 yards of total offense and out gained the Rangers by 90 yards. SNU ran for 161 yards on 37 carries and threw for 271 yards. Northwestern ran for 113 yards on 40 carries and threw for 229 yards.
Derick Perkins led the way with 106 yards on 16 attempts and scored one of two touchdowns.
Brady Wardlaw scored the other touchdown, but struggled through the air. Wardlaw completed just 20 of his 54 attempts and threw an interception.
Jarod Martin pulled in four catches for 108 yards.
The one glaring stat was the fact that SNU had 159 yards on 15 penalties. The Storm also averaged only 26.7 yards per punt.
SNU did get on the board first in the first quarter on Wardlaw's quarterback keeper from three yards. The Storm took a 6-0 lead on the 9-play, 41-yard drive. The Rangers tied it at 6-6 early in the second on a Kyle Jech 36-yard pass to Kent McDonald and
Michael Hicks kept it at 6-6 when he blocked the Jech extra point attempt.
Perkins broke the 6-6 tie with 10:29 left in the third with a 3-yard run to end a 10-play, 83-yard drive, but
Shawn Mingledorff's kick was blocked as SNU led 12-6. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Jech hit Avery Morris for an 82-yard strike and then completed the 2-point conversion and it was all Rangers from there.
Northwestern added two more touchdowns in the fourth to put the game on ice.
The Crimson Storm will have to regroup quickly as it now heads to Wichita, Kan., to play No. 8 MidAmerica Nazarene at a neutral venue at Wichita State's Cessna Stadium, for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
