NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — Brady Wardlaw threw for a school-record six touchdowns, but that might not even be the most noteworthy stat of the night in Southern Nazarene's 42-18 win over Bethel College (Kan.).
Not since 1990 had a drop kick been used in college football to complete a field goal or an extra point, yet it was Gabe John who booted an extra point through on a drop kick with just over a minute left in the third quarter. The last time that happened was in an NCAA Division III game between LaVerne and Claremont Mudd-Scripps in California. The call for the drop was due to multiple injuries to SNU's kicking game.
Despite the injuries in the kicking game, SNU was able to pull out its third straight victory and move to 3-1 on the year.
Wardlaw threw for 362 of those yards on 29-of-43 yards passing and hit Jarod Martin twice for 72 yards. He also hit David Balenseifen for 31 yards. On the defensive side, SNU picked off four errant Bethel passes and nearly had six to go with one sack. The Crimson Storm knocked down the Thresher quarterback 10 times.
There were five interceptions total in the game, including one from SNU and each team lost three fumbles.
The Crimson Storm return home for the first game of a three-game stand, Sept. 25 when they host NCAA Division II Southwest Baptist (Mo.).
