Day 1 Recap

ROME, Ga. —
Southern Nazarene garnered its first two All-Americans of the year as Jake Stephens and Colin Pasque both earned NCCAA All-American honors on the second day of the NCCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.

Stephens took second in the discus throw while Pasque took second in the pole vault. Stephens' final throw was 48.79 meters and he had the lead for the first four throws and in a total average would have had the lead. He also took 10th place in the javelin with a throw of 41.66 meters. Pasque cleared 4.75 meters in the pole vault. Michael Piatt also competed in the pole vault.

"Jake had a fantastic day," said Head Coach Billy Miller.  "He's worked hard all year and to be in the top three against some of the top Division II teams is really good."

Airick Johnson and Deandre Vick qualified for the final round in the 110-meter hurdles. Johnson placed first with a 14.46 and Vick finished in sixth with a 15.43.

"We're setting up to where we want to be on championship Saturday," said Miller.

Hunter Stanley took fifth in the high jump clearing 1.88 meters while Austin Williams tied for seventh clearing 1.83 meters. Riwan Jimoh qualified for the 400-meter dash finals as he finished eighth with a 49.81. Sterling Wright finished in 14th in the 200-meter dash with a 22.28. The 4x800-meter relay team of Andrew Leahey, Jimoh, Noe Perez, and Grayson Haws took sixth place with a 7:52.04.

The men's team sits sixth place heading into the final day with 24.5 points. Bethel (Ind.) leads the way with 43.5 points while Azusa Pacific is second at 30 points and Oklahoma Christian is in third at 29 points. Greenville and Shorter are just ahead of SNU at 27 and 26 points.

The women's 4x100 team ran a 50.65 and was just outside of making the finals with a ninth place finish. Raven McDaniel took 16th in the 200-meter dash with a 26.39 and Lisa Childress took 20th with a time of 26.61.

"The girls 4x100-meter relay team ran really well," said Miller. "They barely missed qualifying for the final but they're a young squad. They're all sophomores and to come in and almost make the finals it shows their character, their class and their hard work."

Southern Nazarene will compete again tomorrow for the final day of the NCCAA National Championship.
