BETHANY, Okla. — Just over a month ago, Northwestern stole one away form Southern Nazarene up in Alva, but fast forward 38 days later and pay back came around for the Crimson Storm as 13th-ranked SNU thumped No. 23 Northwestern, 81-50.
The Crimson Storm (20-5, 13-4 SAC) secured their fifth straight 20-win season and third consecutive for head coach
Adam Bohac.
“We played well and it was great to get this win,” said Bohac. “Northwestern is a team that has been playing well and they handled us at their place. We had a much better effort tonight. The rest from Saturday was great, but we had three great days of practice leading into today.”
SNU recorded a season high 12 3-pointers as
C.J. Henry and
A.J. Thomas combined for seven of those treys and 36 points. It was just the third time in school history that an SNU team hit 12 threes which is tied for fifth most in a single-game in school history. Henry led the way with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 from outside. He was also a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Thomas buried three treys going 5-of-11 from the field and hit all three free throw attempts. Thomas also grabbed six rebounds and handed out four assists.
Horace McGloster also added 12 points off the bench.
Xavier Alexander scored nine points and had eight rebounds while
Clement N'Gom scored eight.
It took about four minutes into the game before SNU got rolling. The Rangers (16-8, 10-6 SAC) led 9-7 before Henry ignited an 18-3 run with a jumper and then capped it with another 3-pointer as the rout was on. The Storm closed the first half on an 8-1 run to take a 43-25 lead into intermission.
It was more of the same in the second half as SNU outscored Northwestern 20-8 in the final eight minutes of the game.
SNU was 5-of-11 in the first half and 7-for-12 in the second from beyond the arc, firing a season-high 52.2 percent from the perimeter. The Storm shot 49.1 percent from the field and beat Northwestern in nearly every facet of the game. SNU out rebounded the Rangers, 47-29, doubled up their points in the paint, 20-10, and scored 24 points off of 14 turnovers. The SNU bench also outscored Northwestern's 27-14.
Ten different players all got in the book with at least one point and the Storm dished out 17 assists; the second most by SNU in conference play this season.
“We were very unselfish with the ball tonight,” said Bohac. “Several times we made one more pass so now it goes from being an average shot to being a great shot and that increases percentages.”
The win increases the Storm's lead over Northwestern to 2.5 games for second place and leaves SNU just a game behind Oklahoma Baptist for the conference's top spot.
The Crimson Storm though now hit the road for a four-game stretch that will start Saturday at Oklahoma Christian for an 8 p.m. SAC game.
