OKLAHOMA CITY — Morgan Loewen couldn't have had a better start to her senior campaign outside a 3-match winning streak to start the season. Loewen ripped double-figure kills in all three of Southern Nazarene's opening matches at the Oklahoma City Classic.
The Crimson Storm (2-1) won the season opener, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-20), over Oklahoma Wesleyan, before falling, 3-1 (18-25, 25-16, 28-26, 25-18), to College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in the second match. SNU closed out the night in convincing fashion by blowing out Dallas Christian, 3-0 (25-11, 25-4, 25-8).
Loewen posted a match high 10 blocks in the first match, 17 in the second and 14 in the third while hitting .571 (14-2-21) against Dallas Christian. Cuyler Vesely and Sarah Groesbeck fed Loewen all day dishing out a match-high in assists in all three matches. Vesely had 28 against OWU and 38 against C of O while Groesbeck notched 33 assists in the final match of the night.
Kacee Montgomery posted five blocks in the opener and three in the second match. She also notched a solo block in the nightcap. Taryn Steele and KateLyn Biddy also posted a tournament-high 25 digs against C of O.
The Crimson Storm used late runs in all three sets against OWU to complete the 3-0 sweep.
The Eagles took a 12-11 lead midway through the first set before SNU closed it out with a 14-2 run to take a 1-0 match lead. The Crimson Storm led 13-12 in the second before Steele ignited a 12-6 run to put SNU up 2-0 heading into the final set. The Eagles trailed 19-14 in the third and closed it to 22-20 before committing three straight errors to hand the set and match over to SNU.
SNU jumped out quickly on College of the Ozarks with an 8-2 run to start the match and held on to take first set. The Bobcats, who received votes in the NAIA Preseason Poll, flipped the switch and turned the tables to tie the match at 1-1 heading into the third. Neither team led by more than two in third set until the Bobcats used a 3-0 run to take a 19-16 lead. SNU answered with a kill by Loewen, but Ozarks countered with five straight to climb out to a 24-17 lead and set point.
Southern Nazarene didn't go away quietly.
The Crimson Storm scored eight straight to retake the lead and took set point at 25-24. The Bobcats scored back-to-back points to take a 26-25 lead before a service error tied it at 26. Ozarks put it away and took a 2-1 lead in the match on a kill and an SNU error. The Bobcats put it away in the fourth set by closing with a 12-5 run to improve to 4-0 on the season.
It was all Crimson Storm in the final match as they just trailed once the entire match. Dallas Christian scored just 23 points the entire match.
SNU returns to action Tuesday at Southwest Assemblies of God for a 7 p.m. contest.
