Storm Take Midweek Win Over OCU

The Storm hang on for a 9-8 win over Oklahoma City University after a back-and-forth battle

Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Southern Nazarene baseball team traveled up the road for a midweek matchup against Oklahoma City University and came away with a 9-8 win.

The Storm (9-25, 3-18 GAC) got on the board first in the opening inning. Antonio Sabala doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Brady Benedict's single to right field for a 1-0 lead.

OCU (12-19, 7-11 SAC)  responded in the third with two runs to take a 2-1 lead, but SNU answered in the fourth. Blake Brinkmeyer walked and Cade Ross followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Ryan Talley then singled to right,  scoring Brinkmeyer to tie the game at 2-2. A wild pitch allowed Talley to move to second and Ross to come home giving the Storm a 3-2 lead.

After an error by OCU's third baseman, Sabala walked to load the bases. Benedict then drew a walk, forcing Talley to extend the lead to 4-2. Weston Hicks followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing Sabala in to make it 5-2.

The offense kept rolling as Jaxon Gless walked and Brinkmeyer singled to left, bringing in two more runs. After Tucker LeMay was hit by a pitch, Benedict added an RBI single, and Southern Nazarene extended its lead to 7-2.

Oklahoma City fought back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 7-4. The Stars added another run in the sixth and tied the game at 7-7 with two runs in the seventh.

The Storm responded in the eighth as Aiden McCullough singled to right, moved to second on a Sabala groundout, and then advanced to third on a Benedict single. Weston Hicks followed with another single, bringing McCullough home. Gless singled to load the bases, and Brinkmeyer's sacrifice fly scored Benedict, putting SNU up 9-7.

The Stars managed to score once more in the bottom of the eighth to make it 9-8, but the Storm held on to secure the 9-8 win over the Stars.

Next Up
The Storm will travel to Ada, Oklahoma to take on East Central University on Friday, April 2, for a single game at 2:00 pm and a 12:00 pm doubleheader on April 5.
