BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene has announced the hiring of Danny McFarlane as the new SNU Track and Field Sprints and Hurdles Coach effective January 16th.
McFarlane comes to SNU with an extensive list of experience and success, not only as coach, but also as an athlete at the Olympic level. A native from St. Mary, Jamaica, McFarlane is known as one of Jamaica's best hurdlers, becoming a silver medalist in the 4x400m at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and in the 400m hurdles at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. McFarlane has also been on the podium in multiple World Outdoor and Indoor Championships as well as in the Pan American Games.
While attending the University of Oklahoma, he was a six-time All-American, becoming an NCAA Indoor National Champion in the 4x400m in 1996 and 1997. McFarlane's success did not stop there as he won the NCAA Outdoor National Championship in the 4x400m in 1998.
SNU Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance, Steve Johnson, held a huge role in locating the proper person to fill the position. Johnson has been delighted about McFarlane's hire, emphasizing, "We're very excited to bring Danny into the track and field program here at SNU! His track and field experiences are incredible. He also has a great story and is truly committed to helping young people live their best lives on and off the track. We have no doubt he will have a positive impact on our track and field student-athletes and the program."
McFarlane has also taken his talents to the coaching side of track and field, serving as a "Track and Speed" training coach since 2012. His coaching efforts helped coach a gold medal member of the 4x400 USA Track and Field World Indoor Championship.
McFarlane has worked up an incredible professional career as well, working at SSM St. Anthony Hospital in Norman as a Mental Health Tech since September of 2014. Here, he observes and reports patient's behaviors to healthcare professionals, assists in keeping clients safe, and facilitates groups for mental health disorders and social skills.
Southern Nazarene University and its athletic department is excited for the addition of McFarlane to the track and field staff and what he will bring to the program moving forward.
