Box Score BETHANY, Okla. —
Mallary Pineda tallied her first three points of the year with a goal and an assist with a 2-0 blanking of Rogers State in the 2014 season opener.
Â
Southern Nazarene picked up their fourth straight win over Rogers State and won their second straight home opener and the first season opening game since 2011.
Â
The Crimson Storm (1-0-0) got on the board early as
Sheridan Williams scored off a rebound of Pineda's shot only two minutes into the game to make the score 1-0. Williams' goal scored the first goal out of all of the GAC teams for the 2014 season and her first collegiate goal.
Â
"There was a nice buildup to Sheridan's goal, which started from Bekah (Stewart) to Kasey (Throgmorton), and Kasey to Mallary," said Head Coach
Julie Duncan. "Mallary had a beautiful shot that was hard enough that the keeper couldn't handle it. Sheridan is known for following through and tucking it away."
Â
SNU's defense was strong in the first half as it kept the ball on Rogers State's (0-1-0) side of the field for most of the half, which allowed them to record 15 shots, with four being on goal. Rogers State did not record a shot in the first half.
Â
The Crimson Storm scored their second goal of the game in the 41
st minute as Pineda scored from a follow-through pass from Stewart. That gave SNU a 2-0 lead and gave Pineda her first goal of the season.
Â
The Crimson Storm kept up the intensity on offense, attempting 11 shots in the second half, with two being on goal. The Hillcats attempted three shots in the half, but were unable to convert.
Â
Natasha Fuentes recorded one save for the Crimson Storm and Teri Cocke recorded four saves for the Hillcats, all in the second half.
Â
"I'm excited with the way we looked, with the way we worked the ball," said Duncan. "We had a lot of shots, which is great. I'm thrilled with winning 2-0 to open the season at home. It sets the tone for the year. It's a big win. It will give us an advantage going into the Oklahoma Christian game. Then we hit the road for seven games."
Â
The Crimson Storm travel to Oklahoma Christian Saturday for a 6 p.m. non-conference contest.Â
