Southern Nazarene avenged an earlier loss to UCO

Box Score BETHANY, Okla. — It didn't matter who and it didn't matter when, but when the need was there tonight for Southern Nazarene, someone met it in a 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23) win over Central Oklahoma.

It was the first win over the Bronchos (10-2) inside the Sawyer Center since SNU Head Coach Kevin Ingram took the helm. It was also the second straight year that the Crimson Storm (8-5) have unseated UCO.

"That's a big win in a sense of that's a school we compete with recruiting wise," said Ingram. "You always want to beat those teams in town that you see all the time. More than that, I am just impressed with my team that we stuck to the game plan. We struggled a bit in that second set and it did get away from us, but we responded. We played low error volleyball and that was difference in the match."

Just about everyone who touched the floor had a big moment in one of the many long rallies of the night. Three different players had double figure kills, three different players had double figure digs and six players had multiple blocks as SNU tied a season-high with 12.

Jamie Hope was everywhere again Tuesday night as the senior had 11 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks. She also hit .478 on the night with no errors. The Storm as a team had just 10 errors as they had UCO out of system most of the night.

Taylor Jacobs had a team high 15 kills and nearly had a double-double with nine digs. She also added three blocks. Kira Roberts had 10 kills and chipped in with three blocks. Kaylee Piatt notched her third double-double of the season with 37 assists, 15 digs and three blocks. Abbey Bell also had 17 digs as Emily Dick had four blocks while Emilee Crawford had two.

"It's a fun place where we are at right now," said Ingram. "The things that we're working on and striving to do on a day to day basis we are starting to see the rewards of that. We still have lots of room to improve though, but at the same time to rebound and not lose focus tonight, shows a lot of heart."

The Storm trailed 13-12 in the opening set when Hope sparked a 4-0 run to put the Storm out in front 16-13 and SNU never trailed again in taking a 1-0 lead. The Bronchos had 19 digs in the second set alone as SNU struggled to find a rhythm. SNU trailed by as much as five at 17-12, but battled back to tie at 18. UCO though closed it out with a 7-2 run to knot the match at 1-1.

SNU got it rolling again in the third set, recording just two errors and forcing 11. The Storm trailed again at 7-6 early in the third set, but another Hope kill ignited a 12-5 run as SNU took an 18-12 lead and pushed it to seven twice before closing out the third set.

The fourth and final set though typified the night as SNU trailed 17-12. The Storm rallied for three straight points to cut it to 17-15. UCO took an 18-15 lead, but a Roberts kill and a UCO error made it 18-17. Barbara Jackson, who finished the night with a game-high 18 kills, gave the Bronchos a 19-17 lead, but it didn't stop SNU's momentum. SNU got back-to-back kills from Roberts and Jacobs to tie it at 19 before Jackson gave UCO its last lead of the night at 20-19.

Another Jacobs kill tied it at 20 and a UCO error gave SNU its first lead of the set. The Bronchos tied it for the last time at 21-21 before a Jacobs kill, a Dick ace and a UCO error gave SNU set point at 24-21. The Bronchos staved off two set points to cut it to 24-23, but Crawford put it away with the final kill of the night.

The Storm now hit the road for the first time in Great American Conference play as they travel to Northwestern Oklahoma State, for a 7 p.m. Thursday.
