Box Score 2 BETHANY, Okla. — Ouachita Baptist's Davis Ward struck out 14 in a 5-1 win over Southern Nazarene and Landon Flax hit a game-winning two-run home run in the top of seventh in a 3-2 victory as OBU swept SNU Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson Storm (12-21, 6-17 GAC) held leads early in both games and were 8-2 when scoring first coming into the weekend series.
SNU struck first in the opener when
Chance San Miguel laced a single up the middle to score
Jacob Inbody and give the Storm a 1-0 lead. That was all the offense for Southern Nazarene as OBU answered with three in the fifth and added one each in the sixth and seventh innings to put it away.
Matt Berry (2-8) took the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits in six innings of work. Inbody went 2-for-3 with a run scored while
Nate Saquilon and
Kyle Fultz each went 2-for-4.
In the nightcap the Storm got a run each in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. The first came in on a bloop single by
Riley Morrow that bounced right on top of the left field line and scored
Daniel Martinez, who doubled, to give SNU a 1-0 lead. The second came on a single through the left side by Fultz.
The Tigers got one back in the fourth and had their backs against the wall. Southern Nazarene's
Tim Coleman had a strong start on the hill as he gave up just one run on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. He then handed the ball over to
Jake Bidelman who had not given up a run on year. The senior cruised through the sixth unscathed and gave up two singles, but picked off a runner after the leadoff single. Bidelman had Flax on a full count and two outs when Flax blasted a two-run shot to right to put OBU up 3-2.
The Storm had a chance to tie or win it in the bottom half of the inning as Morrow reached on a single and Inbody reached on a fielder's choice. Both were moved up on a ground out to put runners at second and third with two outs. SNU though grounded out to short to end the game.
Bidelman (1-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of work. Morrow led the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The two teams will close the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. GAC game.
