Bittersweet End

Southern Nazarene closed out its 2013 season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A season in which Southern Nazarene was just two wins shy of tying a school record came to a bittersweet end Friday as SNU fell 3-0 to Point Loma Nazarene, but won its final match 3-0 over Campbellsville in the final match of pool play at the NCCAA National Championship.
 
The Crimson Storm finish the 2013 campaign at 27-12 and took second place in just their second season in the Great American Conference.
 
Kira Roberts went out with one of her better matches of her career in the win over Campbellsville. The senior ripped 16 kills and hit .500. Emilee Crawford finished with 10 kills and two blocks to go with four digs. Senior Jamie Hope tallied six blocks, six digs and five kills as she closed out her career as well. Kaylee Piatt recorded 36 assists and seven digs along with three blocks. Abbey Bell also had 13 digs.
 
The Storm hit .340 (44-9-103) and didn't have much resistance outside of the second set as Campbellsville had three of its five blocks in that set.
 
SNU had no trouble pulling away from the Tigers in the opening game as Crawford sent SNU on a 9-1 run to lead 20-10 and held on for a 25-16 win. The two teams exchanged leads seven times and tied 12 times in the second set before Roberts ignited a 6-2 run to give SNU a 22-18 lead. The Tigers cut it to 22-21 before the Storm got two kills from Crawford to get set point at 24-22 and Hope put it away with a kill to give the Storm a 2-0 lead. SNU withstood another late run late in the third set as Campbellsville closed it to one twice. The Storm led 21-20 when The Tigers had two straight errors before Roberts gave SNU match point with a kill at 24-20. CU got two more points before Roberts ended the season with a kill and gave SNU the win.
 
In the opener, Point Loma Nazarene held SNU to just a .137 clip on the day and gave up just three blocks to the Storm. Jacobs led the way with seven kills and nine digs. Jamie Hope had six kills and five digs. Kaylee Piatt had 21 assists. Abbey Bell notched 11 digs.
 
SNU battled back early in the first set, trailing 17-13, when Piatt found an open spot on the court to spark a 6-2 run to tie it at 19. The Sea Lions then broke a 20-20 tie with three straight and rolled to a 1-0 lead. Point Loma led 8-7 in the second before closing the set on a 17-2 run to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Sea Lions got out to an 8-2 lead in the final set and cruised from there for the win.
