Volleyball Comes Up Short Against the Bison

Southern Nazarene battled, but couldn't overcome the Oklahoma Baptist falling 3-1 in Bethany

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene dropped its home contest Tuesday night, falling in a four-set battle with the Bison of Oklahoma Baptist.

The Crimson Storm (15-12, 7-6 GAC) hung around early but struggled to slow down the Bison's (20-5, 12-1 GAC) balanced attack, which produced 65 kills on .307 hitting on the evening.

The two squads traded points back and forth, but a 7-1 run pushed the Bison in front 19-13. SNU attempted a comeback, but Oklahoma Baptist finished things off, taking the opening set 25-19. The Crimson Storm kept it close behind 15 kills on .224 hitting, but OBU posted 18 kills on .313 hitting.

The Crimson Storm looked to answer and did just that, jumping out to a 13-9 lead. SNU cruised from there, posting a match-best 19 kills with just two errors on 46 swings for a .370 clip to win set two 25-19 and even the match at 1-1.

The third set swung back to the Bison. SNU was in control, but an 8-1 run for Oklahoma Baptist was all they needed to get the momentum back on their side. The Bison hit .333 with 15 kills, while SNU posted 13 kills on .270 hitting. OBU used that late run to create separation and closed out the set 25-18 to go up 2-1.

SNU needed to answer in the fourth, but OBU continued to roll as it took a 15-11 lead. The Crimson Storm struggled to chip away as the Bison closed out the set 25-18 and took the 3-1 victory.

Kate Wright led SNU with 24 kills and 14 digs, while Ava Bell added a career-high 10 kills and Maecie Hawthorne added 9. Emma Grace Moddelmog orchestrated the offense with 44 assists and 14 digs, and Sydney Marquez led the back row with 19 digs. Riley Richardson and Hannah Morgan each added 2 blocks.
