Crimson Storm Denied in Weatherford

Bulldogs sweep Southern Nazarene Volleyball in their second meeting of the season

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Southern Nazarene dropped its road contest Thursday night, falling in three close sets to Southwestern Oklahoma State.

The Crimson Storm (15-11, 7-5 GAC) hung around most of the match but struggled to stop the Bulldogs' (15-9, 8-4 GAC) middle-blocker duo, who combined for 35 of their 51 kills in the evening.

Southwestern Oklahoma State grabbed early momentum in the first set, taking a quick 9-5 lead. The Crimson Storm clawed its way back to cut the deficit to just two points at 23-21, but SWOSU finished things off while posting 13 kills on .250 hitting to edge SNU 25-22.

The two squads traded points until the Crimson Storm took advantage of a 5-0 run to take the lead 16-13. SNU remained in control, pushing its lead to 20-16. The Bulldogs called a timeout to regroup and did just that, rattling off nine straight points to take the set 25-20 while SWOSU reeled off 17 kills to go up 2-0.

The third set was SNU's best offensively, but Southwestern held on late. The Crimson Storm posted 16 kills with just two errors on 42 swings for a .333 clip, but SWOSU hit a match-high .419 with 21 kills to close out the set 25-23 and take the 3-0 victory.

Southern Nazarene needed to answer, but the Bulldogs took an early lead once again, 14-8. SWOSU then went on a 6-1 run to extend its lead to 22-18. SNU rallied, making the score 24-23, but the Bulldogs tacked on one final kill to take the set 25-23 and take the match 3-0.

Kate Wright led SNU with 18 kills, 3 aces and 3 blocks, while Riley Richardson added 5 kills and a team-high 5 blocks. Emma Grace Moddelmog orchestrated the offense with 33 assists and 8 digs.
