Box Score JOPLIN, Mo. — The streak begins and now heads to three straight for Southern Nazarene after SNU knocked off Missouri Southern State on its home field with a 2-0 win, Saturday night after a long delay in start time because of inclement weather.
It was the second straight shutout for the Crimson Storm (3-1) who have outscored their opponents 5-0 in the last two games. It was also two new faces who did the damage for SNU as
Ericka Ramirez and
Bekah Stewart both scored their first goals of the season.
The two sophomores are two of five different players who have scored eight goals for the Storm in four games.
Ramirez put the Storm on top in the 39
th minute when she scored on a penalty kick to give SNU a 1-0 lead. A little over 40 minutes later in the 81
st minute
Bekah Stewart took a throw-in from
Kendra Nixon and turned an fired as she found the back of the net and that's all that SNU needed.
“Bekah was just outside the 18-yard box and just turned and shot it,” said Duncan. “We thought it was going to go out of bounds, but somehow dropped in. She just turned and ripped it. It was beautiful.”
Yoli Zamarripa helped lead the defensive charge with three saves and the Crimson Storm defense was just a tough in front of her.
“I figured we would be ok if we played our game and our style,” said Duncan. “They (MSSU) definitely had some speed, but Yoli had a great game and our defense played great. We played great as a team all-around. Our forwards stepped up with pressure and our midfielders and defenders followed right in behind and we just shut their offense down. We did allow any through balls.”
Southern Nazarene will now head to Southwest Baptist, Tuesday,
