Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene was so close to its first win and it couldn't have come against a more fierce rival than Oklahoma City, but OCU got a ball to bounce its way in overtime for a 2-1 win.
Oklahoma City was playing in its fourth overtime game of the season and had an unbeaten record on the line, but got a bounce off of an Adam Black shot that hit the crossbar above
Blake Anderson and bounced just far enough back into the goal to score the win in the 98
th minute after it carried into overtime with a 1-1 tie.
It was Black who struck first for the Stars (4-0-2) just 23 seconds into the game off a Kieran McLachlan assist, but the Storm (0-5) fired back in the 24
th minute.
Hajime Chumpitaz went racing down the middle and fed sophomore
Javier Caballeros who laced a 15-yard shot to the bottom left side of the net to knot it at 1-1.
Both teams had several chances in the second half, but neither got a break in regulation. Early in overtime, Oklahoma City was pushing up the left side of the box and tried to fire one toward the goal, but SNU was called for a hand ball and the Stars were awarded a penalty kick that ricocheted off the right post and back into play as SNU held off the win for at least a few minutes.
It wasn't much longer and before Black notched his second goal and the game-winner.
Blake Anderson came up with five saves for SNU while Joe Shulberg had four for the Stars. SNU put five of its 10 shots on goal while OCU put seven of its 29 on frame.
The Crimson Storm will now get set for an epic home stand as the next six matches, Sept. 14-29, will be played at Wes Harmon Field. The final six will be played on the road. SNU will next host Fort Hays State (Kan.), Friday, for the MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) opener at 7 p.m.
