BETHANY, Okla. — Once the floodgates opened, the runs never stopped for Southern Nazarene as SNU picked up its first Sooner Athletic Conference with a 12-6 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State.
Josh Riley's three-run bomb to right center in the second inning ignited a charge that carried the momentum the rest of the way. The Crimson Storm had fallen behind 3-0 through an inning and a half, but
Nate Saquilon led off the bottom of the second with a single and then
John Basnight roped a one-out single to put runners on first and second.
Tyler De Trinidad put the Storm on the board when a single to center that scored Saquilon before Riley's shot opened up the game and gave SNU a 4-3 lead.
Austin Samulowitz put the Storm on top 5-3 when he scored on a wild pitch and then
James Tunnell crossed the plate on a
Ryan Williams double to give SNU a 6-3 lead at the end of the second. The Storm added another run in the third on a two-out single up the middle by Riley, but Northwestern answered with a run in the fourth to make it 7-4.
SNU unloaded again in the bottom of the fifth with four more runs and added another in the sixth to lead 12-4. Basnight and De Trinidad scored the first two runs in the fifth on another Riley single up the middle and a double down the left field line by Samulowitz. Tunnell drove home the third run of the inning with a ground out to short before
Jacob Inbody singled to left to score Samulowitz.
The Rangers got two runs back in the eighth, but that was as close as NOSU came.
Riley went 3-for-3 on the day with six RBIs and one run scored. De Trinindad was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Basnight was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Tim Coleman (1-0) picked up the win after allowing just two runs, one earned, on four hits in three and two-thirds innings of work in relief.
Jake Bidelman got the start after and allowed four runs on seven hits.
Southern Nazarene moved to 3-8 on the year and 1-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play and will now travel to Alva, Okla, Saturday, for a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader at Northwestern Oklahoma State.
