Holding Tight

Southern Nazarene held a 1-0 lead into half and through the night in a win over Trevecca

Thompson scored the only goal of the night in a 1-0 shutout.
Box Score KISSIMMEE, Fla. — One goal and a ton of tension can easily describe Southern Nazarene's night as SNU scored late in the first half and held Houghton (N.Y.) for a 1-0 win in the NCCAA National Tournament.

The win was the second straight upset of the night as the fifth-seeded Crimson Storm (12-7-1) upended the fouth-seeded Highlanders just after eighth-seeded Trevecca Nazarene took down top-seeded Judson (Ill.), 3-2.

Southern Nazarene looked like they might get popped early as Houghton controlled the possession for about the first 10 minutes and forced Yoli Zamarripa to make a great save. The Crimson Storm though and begin to get several looks at the goal and finally put it away in the 37th minute when Kayla Thompson took a pass from Kendra Nixon and put the Storm on the board.

“We came out really nervous and it took a few minutes for us to relax,” said SNU Head Coach Julie Duncan. “Once we figured out we could play with them, we started getting what we wanted and finished on one.”

It was all defense in the second half though as he Highlanders began to pressure the SNU defense. Houghton still had just five total shots and two of those on goal. The Crimson Storm put six of their 10 shots on goal. Zamarripa finished with two saves.

“For some reason the nerves kicked back in during the second half,” said Duncan. “We were playing not to lose and hanging on for dear life. It was nerve racking at times, but I have a lot of confidence in this team. They know what to do and what we need to do to pick up wins.”

SNU will now play Trevecca Nazarene, at team it beat 3-1 earlier in the year in Nashville, at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals.

“What happened at the first of the year with Trevecca really doesn't mean a whole lot,” said Duncan. “Both teams are totally two different teams than the two that met then. It's a brand new day tomorrow and we all start at 0-0. We need to come out and play like we know how and I think we will be ok.”
