Bucking the Bronchos

Southern Nazarene knocks off UCO for the first time since 1991

Troup's previous season high was two kills.
Box Score EDMOND, Okla. — Emily Dick and Emily Troup both notched a career-high 11 kills for Southern Nazarene in a 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22) win over Central Oklahoma.
 
The Crimson Storm (11-18) won their third straight and did it after losing the first match, but roared back to win three straight sets to knock off the Bronchos for the first time since 1991. UCO had won 21 straight over SNU until Tuesday night.  
 
Dick and Troup combined with Natalia Oliveira for 33 kills as the senior also had 11 kills. Oliveira also posted seven digs. Taylor Chase dished out 46 assists and added nine digs and three blocks. Jamie Hope had a team-high 13 digs while Nicole Greenway tied a career-high with seven blocks.
 
The Storm started in a 7-2 hole in the first set and didn't start digging out until Emily dick scored the first of five straight points to cut the deficit to 21-17. Ellen Martin brought SNU within two with a kill, but the Bronchos scored the final three points to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The Crimson Storm answered back in the second set though. The two teams tied six times early in the set before UCO took an 11-8 lead and were up 13-10 when Southern Nazarene went on a 5-1 run capped by an Emily Troup kill to lead 15-14. Tied a 21-21 later in the set, Natalia Oliveira ripped a kill that was followed by a Sheridan Steele ace and a Broncho error that gave SNU set point at 24-21. Another UCO error finally gave SNU the set and tied the match at 1-1.
 
The Storm ripped a .382 clip (15-2-34) in the third set and rallied back from being down 16-12 midway through. SNU went on a 7-1 run capped by a Chase kill to take a 19-17 lead. UCO tied it at 19-19, but the Storm answered with six straight points, including two consecutive kills by Troup to give Southern Nazarene a 2-1 match lead.
 
The fourth set nearly mirrored the third as SNU battled from an early deficit at 13-10. SNU then used a 10-4 run to lead 20-17 and took its biggest lead of the set at 23-18 on a Cortney Sheid kill. The Bronchos closed it to 23-22 with four straight, but SNU scored the final two points of the match, including an ace from Sheridan Steele to end the match.
 
The Crimson Storm get back into Great American Conference play with a Saturday trip to Southern Arkansas for a 1 p.m. match.
