Box Score

WAXAHACHIE, Texas — A win is a win, no matter when it happens and wins are something that have escaped Southern Nazarene as of late. SNU finally caught a break and scored a win Thursday night in a 3-1 (25-15, 26-28, 25-21, 27-25) win over Southwestern Assemblies of God.

The win breaks a nine-game skid for the Crimson Storm (9-18) who's last win came on the fifth of the month.

Ellen Martin topped her season-high from just two nights ago with a career-high 19 kills. The senior also notched 13 digs and hit .395 to go with a pair of aces on the night. SNU also got 11 kills out of Nicole Greenway who hit .370 and had five blocks. Kira Roberts and Taylor Chase also had five block apiece as Chase doled out 53 assists and had 10 digs as well. Roberts also had nine kills while Chase had three aces. Jamie Hope posted a match-high 23 digs while Natalia Oliveira had 13 digs to go with her seven kills.

The Storm trailed 6-5 early in the first set when Ellen Martin served a pair of aces to spark a 15-1 run that throttled SNU out to a 20-7 lead. SNU held on to take the first set, but SAGU fired right back to take the second set. Neither team held a lead bigger than one through the first 17 points scored by either side as there were 17 ties until the Lions scored two straight to lead 19-17. SNU answered through with back-to-back points on a Martin kill and a SAGU error to tie it at 19. After 25 total ties let it at 26-26, it was Southwestern that notched the final two points to knot the match at 1-1.

Neither team led by more than three in the third set until SNU used a 6-1 run, capped by a Roberts kill, to lead 22-16. The Lions closed it to three at 24-21, after SNU already had three set points, but another Roberts kills closed out the set and put the Storm up 2-1.

SAGU stormed out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set, but Southern Nazarene answered right back to tie it at 7-7. The Storm didn't take its biggest lead of the set until 18-14 and led 22-18 when the Lions scored five straight to lead 23-22. An Emily Dick kill tied it at 23, but SAGU notched set point at 24-23. SNU then got a Martin kill to tie it at 24 and another kill to take match point at 25-24. SAGU tied it at 25, but it was again Martin who ripped the final two points to give the Storm the win and stave off a third straight five-set match.

SNU returns home Saturday now to host Arkansas-Monticello for a Great American Conference match at noon.
