Bulldogs Take Storm in Five

Southern Nazarene dropped its second straight five-set match

Chase notched her fourth double-double of the season with a career-high 55 assists and 11 digs.
Box Score BETHANY, Okla. — Taylor Chase notched a career-high 55 assists for Southern Nazarene in a 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-9) loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State, Tuesday night.
 
The Crimson Storm (8-18, 5-5 GAC) lost its ninth straight game and second straight five-set match this year. SNU is 1-3 this year in five-set matches.
 
Five players total had double-figure kills as Ellen Martin led the way with 14 kills. She also had seven digs. Kira Roberts also had 13 kills while Natalia Oliveira had 12. Emily Dick and Nicole Greenway each had 10. Oliveira also had 22 digs and three blocks while Greenway had a career-high seven blocks. Jamie Hope was also just one dig shy of her career-high in digs with 28.
 
SNU hit just .157 (60-31-185) and had nine blocks.
 
The Crimson Storm hit just .028 in the first set and dug an early hold and never recovered to go down 1-0. SNU rebounded though the in second set and rallied back late in the set after trailing 19-17. Back-to-back kills from Kira Roberts and Emily Dick tied the set at 19 and forced a SWOSU timeout. Another Dick kill made it 20-19 SNU, but the Bulldogs scored two straight to lead 21-20. Southwestern led 22-20 when SNU got a Roberts kill, a Chase ace and a SWOSU error to lead 23-22. The Storm then closed out the set with a Martin kill and another Bulldog error to tie it at 1-1.
 
The Storm led by as much as five in the third set before a late charge by the Bulldogs gave them the 2-1 lead. SNU led 19-14 after a 10-3 run, but SWOSU answered with a 6-1 run to tie it at 20-20. SNU took a 22-20 lead before Southwestern closed the set on a 5-1 run to pick up the third set.
 
The Storm ripped a .342 clip in the fourth set and blew open the set with a 17-6 run to lead 18-9 and didn't look back from there. Roberts had five kills in the fourth set alone.
 
Southern Nazarene now gets set to travel to Southwestern Assemblies of God, Thursday, for a 7 p.m. game.
