BETHANY, Okla. — Ryan Williams drove home the game-winning run in an extra inning, 6-5 win over St. Gregory's in the first game of a doubleheader before SNU fell 5-4 to SGU in the second game.
The Crimson Storm (13-16, 6-13) rallied in the bottom of the seventh and the eighth innings after giving up a four-run lead early.
Southern Nazarene jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first when Williams hit a deep sacrifice fly to left to score
Chase Glaum who reached on a lead off error.
Ryon Butts then roped a one-out double down the left field line to score Glaum again in the bottom of the third as SNU took a 2-0 lead.
Derek Johnson followed that with a sac fly to right to score Williams before
James Tunnell's sharp ground ball went over the first base bag and bounced off the diving first baseman as he singled home Butts to put SNU up 4-0.
SGU got one back in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to right by Dillon Streber and picked up a two-out error and a hit batter with two outs to cut it to 4-3 in the top of the seventh. SGU took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a single to center field by Trey Sears as the Cavaliers took a 5-4 lead.
Williams led off the seventh with a shallow fly ball in right that bounced away from the right fielder and allowed Williams to dive into second. Butts followed with a walk to put runners at first and second. Then with two outs,
Adam Bies lifted a pinch-hit single that dropped in right to score Williams from second and forced extra innings.
SNU held the Cavs scoreless in the top of the eighth and Glaum recorded a lead off walk in the bottom half of the inning. After a fly out to right Glaum stole second and Williams played hero with a lined shot down the left field that scored Glaum and gave SNU the win.
Glaum (1-0), who came on in relief for starter
Jake Mitcheltree to start the eighth, picked up his first win of the season after allowing just one hit in one full inning of work. Mitcheltree tossed the first seven innings allowing just one earned run and scattered nine hits. He also struck out seven.
Williams led the way, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Butts was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Tunnell was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the nightcap, St. Gregory's Chance Gilbert had thrown a no-hitter through the fourth inning as the Cavaliers jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Gilbert walked Austin Saumulowitz to lead off the fifth before Hill broke up the no-hitter with a single.
Derek Glenn then drove in a pair with a double down the left field line before Butts doubled to left to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Storm threatened again in the bottom of the seventh. Glenn started the rally when a double down the right field line and then moved up to third on a wild pitch as Williams drew a walk. Glenn cut the lead to 5-4 as Butts walked and Williams moved to second on a wild pitch. Bies stepped to the plate with tying run at second and the winning run on first, but grounded into a double play to end the game.
Glenn went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
Tim Cole (1-4) took the loss after he allowed five runs on six hits.
The Crimson Storm now get set to Oklahoma City, Tuesday, for a 7 p.m. game.
