BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene came oh so close to pulling off its second Sooner Athletic Conference series win, but dropped a 2-1 game to Northwestern Oklahoma State after leading 1-0 for six innings. SNU routed NWOSU in the nightcap, 8-2.
Jake Mitcheltree (3-3) had allowed just one run and six hits through the first six innings and was holding on to a 1-0 lead heading into the seventh. The senior recorded his sixth strikeout of the day with the leadoff batter before giving up a single to left center to Quinton Hayes. After Hayes stole second, he was scored on a Wes Brorsen double to left field. Brorsen then scored on Chris Russell's single up the middle and Mario Carrasco took advantage and shutdown SNU in the bottom half to pick up the win.
The Crimson Storm got on the board first in the bottom of the first when
Adam Bies drew a two-out, bases loaded walk to score
Derek Glenn as SNU took a 1-0 lead.
Chase Glaum went 2-for-3 in the game whiel
Ryon Butts went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks.
In the nightcap, Southern Nazarene again got on the board first when Glaum singled and then scored on an attempted pick off that went past the first baseman and down the right field fence.
Northwestern tied it at 1-1 on a Vincent Valdez home run, but the Storm opened up the game in the bottom of the fifth with seven runs. Glenn and
Chase Glaum scored the first two runs on two straight bases loaded walks before
Derek Johnson made it 4-1 on a single. Butts then scored on a wild pitch before Hill picked up a pair of RBIs with a single to left to put SNU up 7-1. The final run of the inning came off of a Ranger error that scored Hill.
Juan Natal got one run back for Northwestern, but that was all the Rangers had left in the tank as
Tim Cole picked up his first win for SNU, moving to 1-3 on the year. Cole went the complete seven innings and allowed just two runs while scattering eight hits.
Glaum went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Butts went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Crimson Storm will now host Hastings (Neb.), Tuesday, for 3 p.m. game.
