LUBBOCK, Texas — Jamie Hope ripped 11 kills and had four blocks for Southern Nazarene in a 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-23, 25-21) loss to Lubbock Christian, Friday night.
The Crimson Storm (28-6, 10-3 SAC) will now have one last shot to secure second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference in the regular season finale against Wayland Baptist, Saturday, at 1 p.m.
Despite the loss, SNU got back
Taylor Jacobs, who went down with a knee injury a few weeks ago against Oklahoma Baptist. The sophomore middle had 10 kills on the night and three blocks.
Ellen Martin added 10 kills and nine digs.
Kira Roberts also had nine kills.
Kaylee Piatt dished out 36 assists and had 16 digs.
Natalia Oliveira matched Piatt in digs while
KateLyn Biddy had a team-high 18.
SNU was held to just a .145 clip (47-23-166) and were also out blocked (8-7) and out dug (86-74).
Southern Nazarene jumped out to a quick lead at 11-6, but Lubbock Christian responded with a 7-1 run to lead 13-12, but SNU quickly tied it at 13-13 on an LCU service error. After three more ties, the Lady Chaps broke a 17-17 tie with an 8-3 run to take the set and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Southern Nazarene led from start to finish in the second set and scored the first three points of the set with two points coming off of
Taylor Jacobs kill. LCU cut it to 8-7, but SNU answered with a 7-3 run to lead 15-10. The Storm led 19-14 late in the set before scoring four straight to take a 23-14 lead and got a kill by
Ellen Martin and
Kira Roberts.
LCU never trailed in the third set, but the Storm was never far away. The Lady Chaps didn't hold a lead bigger than three until LCU used a 4-0 run late to lead 23-18. SNU cut the deficit to 23-20 and 24-21 before a
Jamie Hope kill and an LCU error brought SNU within one at 24-23. LCU though got the next point to take the set and a 2-1 match lead.
There were 10 ties in the fourth set before LCU started to pull away midway through the set when it broke a 12-12 tied with a 6-1 run to lead 18-13. The Lady Chaps led 19-14 before SNU went on a 6-1 run to close the gap to 20-19. That was the last run for the Storm as LCU put the game away with a 5-2 run to take the match.
