Box Score SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Just a week after Southern Nazarene had its worst shooting performace of the year and dropped its first game of the season, No. 11 SNU answered the bell with a 58-54 win over No. 20 Westmont.
The Crimson Storm (4-1) picked up their second win this season over a ranked opponent after shooting 52.3 percent and handed the Warriors (5-1) their first loss of the year. SNU also held off a late charge in the final minutes by Westmont to seal the deal.
Abbey Marra shot 70 percent from the field, going 7-for-10 and was 2-for-3 at the free-throw line as she scored a season-high 16 points and added six rebounds.
SNU as a team shot 52.3 percent (23-44) from the field and hit 76.9 percent (10-13) from the charity stripe. The Storm held the Warriors to just 35.1 percent from the field and allowed just three 3-pointers all day.
Logan Martin added 13 points and four assists while
Oumoul Thiam had 10 points and five rebounds.
Annie Kassongo chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.
Southern Nazarene took a 29-24 lead and stretched the lead to 48-32 with a 19-8 run in the first eight minutes in the second half. The Storm led 50-34 midway through the second half when Westmont began to chip away at the lead. The Warriors cut the deficit to single digits at 52-44 with 6:10 and closed it to two with 3:09 left at 54-52.
Westmont tied it at 54 with 2:45 left, but SNU put the breaks on the comeback as Kassongo drained a jumper and Thiam hit a pair of free throws with 1:25 left to seal the game.
The Storm now get set to take on The Master's at 4 p.m. (CST), Saturday.
