OLATHE, Kan. — Southern Nazarene picked up its first road win of the year with a 68-57 win over Mid America Nazarene.
Three Crimson Storm (3-1) scored in double figures as Sharmeda Johnson led the way with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. She also pulled down six boards. Oumoul Thiam scored 14 points while Logan Martin added 11. Abbey Marra recorded her third double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 boards.
The Crimson Storm scored six quick points to open the game, with Martin, Thiam, and Jaime Bottger hitting for the Crimson Storm. The Pioneers quickly tied the game up. Neither team led by more than four until Thiam broke a 19-19 tie with a trey and Johnson hit a jumper to put SNU on top 24-19 with 2:41 left in the half, but the Pioneers answered right back with a 6-0 to take a 25-24 lead. Marsha Durr stopped the run when she buried a three and Martin made it 29-25 with another field goal.
SNU held a lead for the first five minutes of the second half before MNU retook the lead at 36-35. Martin then hit the first bucket in an 11-0 run as SNU took its biggest lead at that point at 46-36 with 11:17 to play.
Later the Pioneers cut the lead to 52-48, but SNU used a 12-3 run, capped by a Thiam 3-pointer, to take its biggest lead of the game at 64-51 with just 1:36 remaining.
SNU shot 46.9 percent from the field, and 58 percent from the line, compared to MNU's 33 percent and 22 percent from the field and line respectively.
The Crimson Storm will take on Missouri Valley tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Olathe, Kan.
