BETHANY — Southwestern Oklahoma State scored two second half goals and Southern Nazarene never recovered in a 3-2 loss, Friday night.
The Crimson Storm move to 3-4-0 on the season while the Bulldogs move to 4-3-0.
It was the first time that SWOSU head coach Mark Persson had returned to Wes Harmon field since leaving the SNU program after the 2008 season. Persson and the Bulldogs left Bethany with what the head coach did plenty of times at SNU, a win.
It took Southwestern less than two minutes to get on the board, when Tera Santistevan got an open look on the right side of the box and lifted a shot past Rachael Wade to put SWOSU up 1-0. The Crimson Storm answered in the 35th minute when Wade found Jackie Acevedo racing down the middle of the field off a goal kick. Acevedo then floated shot over the top of Chelsey Dodd to knot the game at 1-1 and carried a tie into the half.
It was all Bulldogs early in the second half as they scored two goals in the first 20 minutes. Kelsey Visor made it a 2-1 game for SWOSU when she got the good graces of a missed SNU clear and punched in the goal from the left side. Four minutes later in the 64th minute, Jessica Carbonara guided a goal from about 30 yards out from the left side over Wade for the game-winning goal.
Acevedo closed the gap in the 77th minute with a goal from the left side off a free kick, but that was as close as SNU came. The junior scored her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the game.
The Crimson Storm actually out shot Southwestern, 17-11, but it was the Bulldogs' accuracy that paid off. SWOSU put seven shots on goal compared to SNU's six.
Wade totaled three saves on the night while Dodd came up with five.
Southern Nazarene opens Sooner Athletic Conference play Tuesday when it hosts Rogers State for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
