Crimson Storm Turn in Strong Showing at John Jacobs Invitational

SNU highlights include a school-record 4x100 relay and Bufford’s NCAA provisional javelin victory in Norman

NORMAN, Okla. - The Crimson Storm competed at the John Jacobs Invitational hosted by the University of Oklahoma on Friday, turning in a strong day with standout performances on both the men's and women's sides, highlighted by multiple top finishes and a new school record.

On the men's side, SNU opened the meet with a fast showing in the 100 meters, led by Quinton Zirretta who placed seventh in 10.60. James Beasley followed in 10.73 for 11th, while Patrick Uzzle ran 10.81 for 14th and Stephen Joshua finished 18th in 11.30. In the 200 meters, Beasley led the group in 22.40 for 17th, with Ke'Lin Kearney running 22.69, Jessiah Burris posting 22.94, and Joshua finishing in 23.71.

In the 400 meters, Michael Styles led the way with an eighth-place finish in 48.64. Terrance Green followed in 50.56, while Kearney ran 51.56 and Maximus Washington posted 51.83. Keith Howerton added a 16th-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:03.18, while in the 1500 meters he led SNU in 4:17.87, followed by Myles Mayfield in 5:18.81.

In the hurdles, Terrance Green placed eighth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.79. The 4x100 relay team of Quinton Zirretta, James Beasley, Patrick Uzzle, and Michael Styles delivered a major highlight of the meet, placing second in 40.83 while breaking the outdoor school record. The 4x400 relay team of Maximus Washington, Terrance Green, Michael Styles, and Jessiah Burris also took second in 3:23.03.

In the field events, Gabe Rush placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 1.96 meters (6' 5"), while Maddex Merwin finished second in the pole vault at 4.30 meters (14' 1.25"). Rush also led SNU in the long jump, placing ninth with a mark of 6.70 meters (21' 11.75"). Patrick Uzzle finished 11th in the long jump at 6.54 meters, followed by Gary Russell in 13th at 6.48 meters and Jessiah Burris in 16th at 6.31 meters. Burris also placed seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 13.31 meters.

In the throws, Colter Bufford highlighted the meet by winning the javelin with a mark of 64.60 meters (211' 11"), earning an NCAA provisional mark. Ian Locke placed 10th at 41.76 meters, Gabe Rush finished 12th at 36.71 meters, and Zack Johnson was 14th at 33.44 meters. Johnaton Haywood placed third in the discus with a throw of 47.93 meters and also competed in the hammer throw, finishing 16th at 37.01 meters. 

On the women's side, Alexis Williams led SNU in the 400 meters, placing 12th in 58.78, while Mati Fowler finished 26th in 1:04.48. In the 800 meters, Reagan Rowton ran 2:45.12, and in the 1500 meters, Abby Salter posted 5:46.90 with Kaylee Eberhart following in 6:44.52.

In the hurdles, Mati Fowler placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.60, while Tylie Thrash finished ninth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:10.54. Elizabeth Harmon added a seventh-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 14:24.74.

The 4x100 relay team of Remi Murray, Alexis Williams, Jazzmine Pinto, and Shyla Navarre placed fourth in 50.06, while the 4x400 relay team of Mati Fowler, Alexis Williams, Tylie Thrash, and Ivy Brennan finished third in 4:16.62.

In the field events, Shyla Navarre placed fourth in the pole vault at 3.55 meters (11' 7.75"), while Lexi Atteberry had a strong all-around meet, finishing fifth in the shot put with a mark of 13.40 meters, 15th in the discus at 37.07 meters, and 14th in the hammer at 38.05 meters. Navarre also added a third-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 32.10 meters.

The Crimson Storm will travel to Pittsburg, Kansas to compete in the Pitt State Tune-Up hosted by Pittsburg State on Saturday, April 18.
