Giving Day Spotlight: Larry Mills

BETHANY, Okla. - Larry Mills' journey with Southern Nazarene University (formerly Bethany Nazarene College) spans more than six decades, and his connection to the school is deeply personal. From his early days as a student-athlete to his decades-long career as a professor, coach, and mentor, Larry's story illustrates the power of faith, community, and generosity.

Larry first learned about the potential of a Christian college experience as a 14-year-old in Iowa. "Being a 14 year old and member of a Nazarene church my young mind said, 'Wow, there are two of us who believe God smiles down on athletic/education excellence!'" His early athletic experience included basketball and football at the junior high and high school levels, followed by two years at Burlington Junior College and a year at Iowa State University.

His path to BNC seemed unlikely. "Without much optimism, I decided to write a letter to the 'Head Basketball Coach,' Bethany Nazarene College. After I mailed it…two weeks later I went to my mailbox and there was a letter with Bethany Nazarene College return address on it…David Baker, Head Basketball Coach/Athletic Director—The person I had read the AP article about six years prior! I knew what I should do but had zero faith it could happen because the letter from BNC told me there were no scholarships at BNC and I nor my family had any resources…A truly 'God thing!'"

Larry played one season of basketball at BNC, helping shape the foundation of SNU athletics. "The Coach and the teammates and the culture of the college was truly remarkable. Everything I had experienced in my previous secular settings were great days, but the BNC experience was truly unique, athletics with a 'Higher Purpose'—'Athletics in a Christian Atmosphere' was a remarkable addition to my life journey!"

Over the years, Larry served SNU in countless roles: assistant and head men's basketball coach, business management professor, chair of the School of Business, faculty athletic representative, advisor to student organizations, and even a pioneer in sports broadcasting and business simulation competitions. Reflecting on decades of service, he says, "As I reflect on 60 years attached to BNC/SNU, I owe my blessed life to this institution!"

Larry credits the relationships he formed at SNU with shaping his life. "I met and married an incredible lady for a life partner (Judy), two remarkable children (Cindy and David), two of the world's best grandkids (Whitney and Dakota)!" He describes his gratitude for SNU as boundless: "In the SNU community there are more 'good' people per square foot than you will find anywhere! I have experienced it! I am among all men most richly blessed!"

Even today, Larry continues to support SNU as a donor, knowing his contributions help sustain the mission he has devoted his life to. "The culture of SNU is rich with the right priorities! Relationships turn into lifetime friends!" His story is a testament to the enduring impact of faith, mentorship, and giving back.
