Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas - The Crimson Storm battled wire-to-wire in their final game at the Fairfield Inn Classic, but UT Permian Basin slipped away in the final seconds as Southern Nazarene fell 49-47 in a tough defensive matchup.
Southern Nazarene (0-3, 0-0 GAC) came out with great energy in the first quarter.
Jordan Hoffman got things rolling with a clean layup in the paint, and
Jillian Crawford followed with a smooth finish of her own.
Halyn Browning gave the Storm an early spark, knocking down a three off a nice kick out from Crawford. Hoffman stayed aggressive, hitting a pair of free throws, and Crawford dropped in a short jumper to keep the momentum going. Despite a couple of buckets from the Falcons (1-2, 0-0 LSC), SNU held onto a 15-10 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Storm kept their rhythm early in the second.
Nessa Begay knocked down a jumper in the paint, followed by another strong finish from Crawford, who continued to be a problem offensively.
Carley Gasaway stretched the lead with a deep three off a feed from
Boston Berry, giving SNU some breathing room. UT Permian Basin chipped away late with a three from Rihanna DeLeon, but Southern Nazarene still carried a 28-25 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Hoffman again set the tone at the line, sinking two free throws to push the Storm ahead. Crawford stayed automatic in the paint with another jumper, but the Falcons answered with a layup from Kenadi Rising. Even so, Southern Nazarene held on to a 38-35 advantage after three quarters, looking poised to close things out.
The fourth quarter turned into a grind. Hoffman added two more clutch free throws, and Begay stepped up big at the line as well, knocking down a pair to keep the Crimson Storm in front.
Hannah Duncan chipped in with two free throws of her own, making it a tight 47-48 game with just 46 seconds left.
But in the final moments, UT Permian Basin's Jonesha Neal hit a huge free throw to swing the lead, and the Storm couldn't get the last look they needed.
Southern Nazarene fell 49-47 in a heartbreaking finish in Lubbock, wrapping up a hard fought showing in the Fairfield Inn Classic against UT Permian Basin.
