OKLAHOMA CITY—Southern Nazarene University Men's Golf opened their season by hosting the annual GAC Preview at the Lake Hefner North Golf Course. The Crimson Storm put together a strong showing, placing third as they were paced by individual champion Sam Schmidt.
Schmidt was phenomenal all tournament. He turned in a three-round score of 205 (-11), which was just two strokes off of Michael Hearne's SNU 54-hole record of 203 in 2013 at the same tournament. Schmidt climbed up the leaderboard throughout the tournament. After shooting 70 (-2) in round one, he put together rounds of 67 (-5) and 68 (-5) in rounds 2 and 3 to ultimately move into a three-way tie for first place and force a three-hole playoff, which he won.
As a team, Southern Nazarene finished just two strokes out of second place and 12 strokes from first. Cameron University won the team title at 829 by using a strong final round of 269 to propel them to the win.
Joining Sam Schmidt in the top-five was Landon Hendrix, who took a T-5 finish. Hendrix shot 207 (-9) after following back to back rounds of 70 (-2) on day one with a 67 (-5) in the final round.
Noah Kern took a top-15 finish of his own after also shooting all three rounds at par, or better. Kern finished T-14 after an even 72 in round one was followed by back-to-back 70s (-2) in rounds two and three.
Rounding out SNU's first squad was Mason Sebrandt and Jaxson Northcutt. The two finished just three strokes a part as Sebrandt went 69-76-74 (219) and Northcutt shot 73-77-22 (222). They finished T-25 and T-29, respectively.
Other SNU competitors included Jace Black (T-14), Dawson Dunlap (T-23), Luke Woods (T-29), Theodor Naus (T-35), Grayson Ham (39), Eli Reutlinger (40), and Brandon Tedder (42).
The Crimson Storm will be back in action next Monday and Tuesday as they travel to Muskogee to compete in the NSU Men's Golf Classic at the Muskogee Country Club. The men finished 16th at the NSU Classic last year.
