Second Half Surge

Storm defeats UCO with a strong offensive second half

Box Score BETHANY, Okla. - The Storm hosted the Central Oklahoma Bronchos to open up their 2023-2024 home schedule. The Storm exploded for a 39-point second half to give them a home opener victory, 69-50.

The Crimson Storm (4-0, 0-0 GAC) entered the game ranked No. 13 in the D2CSC poll after three straight wins against in-region opponents. Southern Nazarene has defeated the Bronchos (0-4, MIAA 0-0) in their last four meetings. SNU defeated Central Oklahoma in Edmond last season 85-64. The SNU offense looked to stay hot after coming off of their third road victory of the season over Arkansas-Fort Smith earlier this week.

Both squads struggled early to get some sort of offense going in the first quarter. Southern Nazarene went to the free throw line early, giving Emily Monaghan the ball as she scored the first point of the game. From there, the Bronchos and Storm traded possessions staying close in score, until Jena Bay sank a big three and an Abbie Jiles made layup gave the Storm a 10-5 lead. SNU took advantage of multiple UCO missed shots and landed a 15-8 lead at the end of quarter one.

Jiles opened the second quarter with four quick points to extend the SNU lead. Monaghan and Lauryn Reither each tallied points to continue the Storm run. UCO began to creep back as Karly Wadsworth knocked down two big three-pointers for the Bronchos. This cut the Storm lead to 25-19 before a media timeout. After the timeout Gracee Miller sank another three for UCO cutting the deficit to just one point. Southern Nazarene utilized some easy layups to stay ahead 30-24 at the half.

Reither and Hannah Giddey got the Storm offense going to start the second half. Two made layups and a Reither three put SNU up 11 three minutes into the half. Shannon Burton found herself at the line, sinking two free throws to help extend the SNU lead. The Crimson Storm continued to stay in control as Reither exploded for a steal and a made three. The Bronchos sank a three of their own, but it was not enough to fend off the SNU lead of 53-40 heading into the final quarter.

Reither stayed hot opening up the fourth quarter with a three, continuing the hot Crimson Storm offense. The two teams traded possessions and points, while Monaghan found herself at the line sinking two free throws to keep the SNU offense alive. Giddey and Reither continued to be the catalysts for Southern Nazarene as the game came to a close and the Storm grabbed the victory, 69-50.

Reither ended the day with 24 points and 8 rebounds. Monaghan followed suit with 13 of her own, while Giddey had 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists. Jiles found her success rebounding, finishing the game with 10 rebounds and 8 points.
