Women's Rugby dominates UTSA 77-22 in Home Opening Win

BETHANY, Okla. — After their seasoning opening match against the University of Texas was canceled last weekend, the Southern Nazarene Women's Rugby team hosted the University of Texas San Antonio in Bethany on Saturday afternoon, dominating the Roadrunners with a 77-22 win.

The women were dominant in set pieces. The speed of the SNU backs was completely out of reach for UTSA. The forwards wore down the middle of the pitch and gave the backs all the space they needed to score multiple breakaway tries. Besides Telesi Uhatafe's unbelievable 7-try performance, the forwards had their own standout player. Ashleigh Brooks (Junior 8-man) led her forward pack in a dominant open-play performance.

UTSA exerted a great deal of energy trying to stop the forwards' running game. The forwards followed Brooks' lead and continued to pound on the UTSA defense for the entirety of the match.

The women did a great job of keeping the ball alive. They maintained great continuity using quick tips, offloads, and quick ball to keep the ball moving and the defense on their heels.

Head Coach Aric Gilliand had this to say about his squad:

"These women displayed a high level of athleticism and they are improving every day. We have a tough schedule ahead with Texas Tech and Texas A&M coming up soon!  I believe if these ladies will commit to working hard and continuing to improve, they will have an opportunity to compete well in the conference this year."

SNU is currently in first place in the conference with a 2-0 record, including the UT forfeit. The Storm head to Lubbock, Texas Saturday, September 17th to take on Texas Tech at 2:00 p.m.
