Rangers Knock Off SNU

Northwestern uses explosive offense to run past SNU

ALVA, Okla.—Coming off a win 9 days ago, Southern Nazarene was in search of another one on Saturday, but it was not meant to be as Northwestern Oklahoma State notched their first win of the season in a 47-27 defeat of Southern Nazarene.

After a phenomenal second half performance last week from the Crimson Storm defense, Southern Nazarene (1-7, 1-7 GAC) was unable to ever slow down the Ranger offense. Northwestern (1-7, 1-7 GAC) tallied a season high 481 yards, seemingly racking up those yards at will. They were efficient on the ground with 6.2 yards per carry, as well as through the air with 9.2 yards per attempt.

Northwestern's offense immediately got going. They methodically worked their way down the field and capped off a 14 play, 75 yard drive with a three-yard touchdown pass. The Crimson Storm tied the game early in the second quarter on a Jarvis Davis 11 yard run, but that would be the last time the score was tied as NWOSU scored 23 of the next 30 points to open up a huge lead.

As has been the case for much of this season, Southern Nazarene struggled to finish off drives. They moved the ball well, racking up 365 yards of offense at a respectable 5.4 yards per play, but yards do not matter when they do not add up to points. The Storm had two drives lead to the redzone in the first half, but those drives resulted in a missed field goal and an interception.

Penalties also continued to prove costly to the Storm. They racked up 8 penalties for 93 yards. Half of those penalties would be drive extenders for Northwestern as they gifted the Rangers four first downs with penalties.

Trailing 40-14, Southern Nazarene's offense awoke a bit midway through the fourth quarter, but the deficit would prove to be too much to overcome. Angel Ramirez and Brandon Perez each tallied touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, but the defense never came up with enough stops for the Crimson Storm to battle back.

Jarvis Davis racked up the yards in the game, but turnovers would plague him as Jarvis finished with 3 interceptions and a fumble. He did manage to throw for 165 yards and TD while adding 62 yards on the ground and another TD.

Angel Ramirez was extremely efficient with his carries, amassing 72 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries.

Andrew Tisdale led the way in the receiving game, hauling in 3 passes for 46 yards and a touchdown.

It gets extremely difficult for Southern Nazarene next time out as the Storm travel to Arkadelphia to square off with Henderson State. The Reddies rank No. 20 in the nation and are coming off a 41-38 win over Arkansas Tech on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. next Saturday in Arkadelphia.
