BETHANY – Southern Nazarene's annual celebration of the "Storm Sports Awards" is a special night for all Crimson Storm student-athletes on campus. It's a time when all SNU teams come together, put on something a little nicer than they'd normally wear, and hear their name called for various awards presented live in front of the Southern Nazarene community.
 
This year's celebration, however, looks just a little bit different. With the pandemic flipping our entire world upside down, the 2020 Storm Sports Awards will go down in the SNU Athletics history books. Over the course of this entire week, the Storm Sports Awards (SSA's) will be broken down into three nights of celebration.
 
Tonight's recognition will feature all of the academic awards as well as a few other various awards, while Wednesday night will be featuring the Fall/Winter sports, and Friday night focuses on the Spring sports. This year's academic awards were broken down into three different categories with medals presented to each winner. The Bronze medal recognizes athletes with a GPA of 3.00-3.32, the Silver medal features athletes with a GPA of 3.33-3.65 and the Gold medal recognizes athletes with a GPA of 3.66-4.00.
 
A record 273 student-athletes are recognized this evening for one of three academic achievements. 116 athletes were named Gold medal winners, the most of the three categories. 79 reeled in Silver medals and 78 collected the Bronze medal. For the Gold medal, Football led the way with 20 athletes earning the medal, while Softball recorded 13 on the list. Volleyball put 10 on the Gold medal list while both Women's and Men's Soccer each had 9 make the cut. Baseball tallied 8 athletes for the Gold medal and Women's Golf recorded 7. Women's Basketball had 6 on the list while Women's Track & Field had 5.

The next recognition for the Storm Sports Awards features the Most Improved GPA's for both men's and women's sports. On the women's side, the SNU Softball team brought home the honor after raising their team GPA from 3.35 in 2019 to 3.48 in 2020. On the men's side, the SNU Baseball team earns the recognition, raising their team GPA from 3.00 in 2019 to 3.06 in 2020.
 
Two SNU student-athletes are also recognized for their outstanding achievements in the classroom. One male and female receive the highest academic honor SNU Athletics has to offer in the Dr. Loren Gresham Scholar Award. This award is presented to one male and female who both show character, patience, humility, and who are also admired by many. These student-athletes have shown excellent leadership in the classroom by earning the highest GPA throughout their years here at SNU. For the women, we are proud to present the 2020 Dr. Loren Gresham Scholar Award to Rachel Hurtz. She competes in Cross-Country in the Fall and Track & Field in the Spring and is a senior Mathematics major from Yukon, Oklahoma. She carries a 4.0 GPA. For the men, we are proud to present the 2020 Dr. Loren Gresham Scholar Award to Ethan Johnson. He is a member of the Men's Golf team and is a senior Finance major from Seminole, Oklahoma. He carries a 3.82 GPA.
 
To round off the night, we are proud to recognize one member of the SNU student body who went above and beyond to enhance the atmosphere at all Crimson Storm athletic events. This individual was committed to supporting all sports even if that meant going to some away games. They led others in the crowd and had a certain type of contagious energy that you can't help but love. This award is an honor to present because it is the first of its kind. The winner of the 2020 Josh George Award (SNU Fan of the Year) is Austin Schoenfeldt. He is a senior Accounting major from Fort Worth, Texas.
 
We know how important these student-athletes are when they put their jerseys on to compete, but we appreciate their hard work in the classroom even more. Congratulations to all 273 medal winners as well as all of our other student-athletes who were committed to working hard in the classroom all year long.
