BETHANY, Okla. — Trying to extend its season-long six-game winning streak, Southern Nazarene heads into the 2016-17 Great American Conference Men's Basketball Championships Friday where it will take on Ouachita in the quarterfinals.
Â
The Crimson Storm enter the tournament with their highest seed in school history at No. 4. SNU was the seventh seed in 2015 and was the sixth seed last year. Consequently it is a rematch of last year's quarterfinal game. The Tigers just outlasted the Storm 64-59 on their way to a tournament title.
Â
SNU is 0-2 in the GAC Championships, but this is the first time they will be a higher seed. The Storm and Tigers tip off Friday at 5:45 p.m. and will play the winner of top-seeded East Central and No. 8 seed Henderson State. SNU swept the season series this year with Ouachita with a 61-58 win in Arkadelphia and an 84-78 victory in Bethany. SNU is 8-5 all-time against the Tigers. The Storm split the series with East Central and Henderson State. SNU lost to ECU inside the Sawyer Center, but knocked off the Tigers in Ada. With the Reddies, each protected home court. The Storm are 12-13 all-time against East Central, but snapped a seven-game losing streak ECU with the win two weeks ago. The Storm are 9-8 all-time against Henderson State. SNU is 4-2 against it's side of the bracket this season and 29-26 all-time against them. East Central and Henderson tip off at 8 p.m. Thursday.
Â
ON the other side of the bracket No. 2 Arkansas-Monticello and No. 7 Harding play at 2:15 Thursday while No. 3 Arkansas Tech and No. 6 Southern Arkansas play at 8 p.m. Friday. SNU split with UAM winning on each other's home floor and swept Harding for the first time since joining the GAC. The Storm also split with ATU with a win on each other's home court and swept SAU. Southern Nazarene is 7-3 all-time against Monticello and 5-5 all-time against Harding. It is 5-7 all-time against Tech and 8-3 against the Muleriders. SNU is 6-2 against the other side of the bracket this year and is 25-18 all-time against those four opponents.
Â
The Storm are 10-4 this year and 54-44 all-time against this year's field.
Â
The six-game winning streak for SNU is the longest since joining Division II and is the longest since the 2010-11 season. It's 18 wins ties the school record for most wins at the Division II level and its 15 wins in GAC play are the most in wins within the conference schedule in school history.
