Bisons Run Away From Storm

Harding holds on to a late lead down the stretch

Box Score SEARCY, Ark. — CJ Smith scored a team-high 23 points for Southern Nazarene in a 74-66 loss at Harding Thursday night.
 
The senior went 8-for-15 from the field and 6-for-8 at the line for the Crimson Storm (8-9, 6-5 GAC) who shot just 36.9 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from 3-point range. Smith scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half as the Bisons (10-8, 7-5 GAC) held him to just two points in the first half.
 
Dartanyon Meggs added 14 points and seven rebounds as he went 5-for-8 from the field and 2-for-4 from 3-point range. Quan Conner also had nine points and six rebounds while Jared Starkey had eight points and Antwone Jackson had seven.
 
SNU and Harding traded four leads in the first half as Harding took the last lead of the half in the midst of closing out the opening stanza with a 15-5 run. Jacob Gibson scored 10 straight points in the middle of that run as the Bisons took a 34-25 lead at the break. Harding hit six 3-pointers in the first half.
 
The Crimson Storm though opened the second half with an 18-5 run capped by a CJ Smith trey to put SNU on top 43-39. The Bisons though scored nine straight to lead 48-43 with 10:15 left to play. Harding stretched it to 66-56; its largest lead in the second half, with 1:55 to play, but the Storm got a traditional 3-point play by Smith and a 3-pointer by Garrett Butler to make it 68-62 with 1:21 remaining. The Bisons got a big trey to lead 71-62, but SNU scored four straight to cut it to 71-66 with 34 seconds left, but Harding held on from there.
 
The Bisons did shoot more than twice as many free throws as the Crimson Storm going 22-for-31 at the charity stripe while SNU went 12-for-15.
 
Southern Nazarene will now head to Arkansas Tech to finish off the road trip with a 4 p.m. GAC game Saturday.
