Southern Nazarene picks up third straight win with at OT thriller

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Southern Nazarene started its first season in the Great American Conference at 1-3 last year, but after a 71-69 heart stopping, overtime win Thursday night, the Crimson Storm have flipped the tables and now sit tied in first place through the first four games at 3-1.

There was no doubt from the opening tip what the Tigers' had planned as they tried to hold the GAC's top two scorers in check. After Quan Conner had just four points on two shots and CJ Smith had all four of his first half points on free throws, the plan looked like it might work after 20 minutes of play.

That's when the Crimson Storm (5-5, 3-1 GAC) began to show its depth.

Antwone Jackson notched his first double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. It was the second most rebounds in a single-game in school history. Garrett Butler scored a season-high 17 points as he went 5-for-9 from 3-point range and 6-for-11 from the field. The sophomore scored 11 of his points in the second half. Conner and Smith both still managed to finish in double figures as Smith had 14 and Conner had 13. Smith scored nine of his points at the line, going 9-for-11.

"We really stuck together tonight," said SNU Head Coach Adam Bohac. "Antwone and Garrett really stepped up for us in so many ways outside of the stat sheet as well. Things didn't go well for us early, but we made good decisions and got in the right plays and situations for us. Antwone played so big for us on the boards and Garrett really knocked down some big shots."

Both teams mirrored each other through the entire game as neither squad fired over 30 percent from the field in the first half, but shot 50 percent or better in the second. The biggest difference came off the bench as SNU's reserves outscored OBU's 22-12. The two teams exchanged 10 leads and tied 11 times.

The Crimson Storm led by as much as nine early in the first half at 18-9, but the Tigers closed the half with a 14-5 run to tie it at 23 at intermission. Neither team led by more than six in the second half and both teams had leads with fewer than four minutes to play. The Storm held a 55-51 lead with 3:24 to play, but OBU answered with seven straight to take a 58-55 advantage with 2:28 remaining. Butler buried big 3-pointer with 1:33 to play to tie it at 58 and then put the Storm on top 61-58 with less than a minute left. OBU answered with a trey with 27 seconds left to tie it at 61 before Butler missed a last second shot to win it regulation.

Ouachita Baptist took the first lead in overtime, but after a Francisco Hukill 3-pointer it was all SNU, until OBU tied it with 36 seconds left. The Storm had the ball with seven seconds left when a Conner three was blocked out of bounds. After calling a timeout before an inbounds play SNU reset and got the ball to Jackson who turned and laid the game-winning basket in with just a second left.

"Anton (Kankaanpaa) hit two big threes to start the second half and that helped pull OBU away from what they were trying to do with Quan and CJ," said Bohac. "That opened up things for those two in the second half, but as a team we played well through some adversity early. There were a lot of times were more than one effort was made to keep the ball alive and we just kept fighting."

The win is the third straight conference win for Southern Nazarene.

SNU will try to complete the Arkadelphia sweep as it takes on Henderson State, Saturday, at 4 p.m.
