Box Score BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene showed there was no hangover effect from Thursday's overtime loss as it routed Southeastern Oklahoma State, 84-51, Saturday.
Â
The Crimson Storm (8-7, 6-3 GAC) have won three of the last four games and knocked off the Savage Storm (4-9, 2-6 GAC) for the first time since joining the Great American Conference. Southeastern was the only team in the GAC SNU had not defeated until tonight.
Â
"We didn't allow the East Central loss to impact our game today and that was the most encouraging aspect," said SNU Head Coach
Adam Bohac. "We had a good workout yesterday and guys seemed to flush all of that out of their system and we got off to a good start."
Â
CJ Smith finished with 29 points as he went 10-for-15 from the floor and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. He also had five rebounds and three assists.
Francisco Hukill was the only other player in double figures as he had 10 off of the bench.
Garrett Butler and
Dartanyon Meggs each had nine points for SNU.
Â
"He scores it efficiently when he gets to the line," said Bohac. "He was back to his old self tonight in terms of driving the ball to the goal and got in transition a few times. He's wiry strong and got some shots near the rim and then he got to the line and that get's him going."
Â
The Crimson Storm bench had 31 points compared to just 13 from Southeastern's reserves. The Storm also scored 25 points off of 18 turnovers. SNU turned it over just eight times and just three times in the second half. Southern Nazarene went 30-for-60 from the field and hit 10 3-pointers.
Â
"We have a few guys on any given night that can help us off of the bench," said Bohac. "We're still looking for those every day guys who can contribute. Today was balanced and we did a good job of not turning it over. Just having three turnovers in the second half allowed us to score 49 in the second half."
Â
Southeastern Oklahoma State led just a few times early and were up 19-17 when Meggs hit a layup to spark a 15-2 run to put SNU up 32-21 with 3:32 left in the first half. Southeastern closed it to 35-28 at the break and got within five at 37-32 early in the second half. SNU pushed it to 46-34 on a 9-2 run capped by a Starkey layup, but the Savage Storm cut it to 46-40 with 13:25 to play. Butler hit one of his three treys midway through the second half to put the Crimson storm on top 55-42 before SOSU closed it to single digits for the last time.
Â
Butler then hit another 3-pointer with 8:14 to play and that ignited a 29-5 run for SNU as it closed out the game.
Â
The Crimson Storm now get set to host Southwestern Oklahoma State to wrap up the first half of the GAC season. The Bulldogs lead the conference at 7-1. It will be a "Red Out" night inside the Sawyer Center as tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
